Advice on a decent interim camera

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a decent interim camera?

I currently have access to a Nikon D80 (with 18-135 lens) from work, but I want something a little more compact, but just as versatile to use for shooting on days out. It needs to be something that works well for portraits as well as occasional stills of architecture, etc.

Not likely to get anything for a while, but would appreciate some tips whilst I save my pennies. I'll consider anything at this point, but don't want a standard compact, as I already have one of those.

If a compact isn't what you're wanting, then a compact system camera, like the Olympus Pens, Sony NEX, Panasonics and Samsungs will give you more creative control. They're small, but not cheap...
