Hi I am looking to upgrade my 30D to either a brand new 7d or possibly a 2nd Hand 5d ?
I mostly take photo's of my 2 sons at Ice Hockey - I use currently a 30D with a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens which is probably better than my camera.
I struggle with the ISO on my 30D as it only goes upto 3200 and is pretty noisy up that high.
This is why I am thinking 7d - 12800 ISO - 8fps (I think) would be ideal for my style of shooting but someone has recently said to me "can't beat full frame" so this is where my dilemma begins......

I am probably going to buy a new 7d from Jessops on the 6mth interest free finance option - or do I think about getting a 2nd hand 5d from here ??

Also would this mean I would need to change my lenses ??

As always any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

The original 5d will beat the 7d on IQ, but not necessarily at high ISO performance, but for your other needs it doesn't come close.

The 7d has a bit of a learning curve but is worth it in the long run.

Thanks for the advice Phil but what do you mean "but for your other needs it doesn't come close." ?? Does that mean the 5d doesn't come close to the 7d ??

7D can struggle with high ISO compared to some more modern bodies, considered the 70D? A lot of people prefer it to the older, if better built 7D.

If you moved to full frame your 70-200 would be a LOT shorter ...

My 7D is noisy according to reports / pixel peepers but I've never had clients complain

Look at the 70D.
Pretty much the same AF system as the 7D but has better handling of high ISO noise. The 7D can do ISO12800 but it is not pretty there.

Yes, the 5d isn't really a sport camera, the focussing isn't a patch on the 7d and you'll miss the crop factor too.

How about something like a 1D MKIII, best of both worlds with excellent AF, good at higher ISO, 10 fps and 1.3X crop factor

So looks like the 5d is out so it's looking like either a 7d or a 2nd hand 1d mkIII - bit again, will I have to change my lenses ?? If I got a 1d ??

Sigma 70-200 will be ok on the 1D, but any EF-S lenses you have will not fit

That might not be too bad - if the 70-200mm is ok as that's the one I use the most - I only have a 50mm f1.8 and the std 18-55mm kit lens in my bag

50mm would be ok too as that's an EF lens, so just the 18-55mm that wouldn't fit, can't be bad

So the 1d mkIII would be a better option than the 7d then based on the AF & ISO ??

I would say so given the 1D MKIII when launched was the (Canon) camera of choice for professional sports photographers

Just been looking at the specs for the 1d MKIII and noticed that the ISO range is...
  • ISO 100-3200 (L:50, H:6400)
Would that still be better than the 7d at......
ISO up to 6400 (H:12,800).
??

or is the 70D the one to go for - then I know the camera's never been abused at all or had 1,000,000's of clicks ???
