Hi everyone just need some advice please

I brought a cannon 500d from Jessops at the end of Dec 2010. over the coming weeks started to build my confidence with the camera which I love by the way,I am a private pilot so I have got some lovely aerial shots with the cannon,a friend noticed that there was a mark on the image,so I followed the correct procedure in cleaning by puffing air into the camera but no luck so I sent it back to Jessops who were told by cannon that I had scratched the cmos sensor, cost of repair £680. Not happy I complained they then said I would need to produce an image from as early as possible, I luckily found a photo of my daughters dance competition and hey presto it's there only 10 days after I brought the camera. Cannon said that they wanted to see a recent image so I burnt two images on to disc, now there say they want the original image file but that's been deleted of my card. I am being given the run around at the moment not sure what my best plan of attack should be.

Hi
under the sale of goods act its Jessops issue not Canon's they sold you faulty goods so they need to make good the problem, you could ask for a refund or replacement.
the is a trading standards website I thinkits part of the direct gov web site so do a quick search, arm yourself with the facts and go in and fight your corner.
If needs be follow something up in writing so that you have an evidence trail if you need it and keep everything from canon.
good luck but don't be fobbed off.

John you are technacly correct but you have to proof its s manufactoring fault and not a issue that was caused by the owner.

Anyhow. Have you tried to see if you can recover the original files from the card? There is various software on the net you can try.

Another point. Ask them which service centre they used. They most likely will say its Thomas camera services who aren't a canon authorised centre. Just had to send my 7D for repair and ewhen they mentioned them i stopped and pjoned Canon who confirmed they arent. If thats the case complain as it may afect the Canon warranty and its not canon asking for the images but there service centre.

Jessops have to make it good. Try to recover the files and get a early image and keep fighting. Also involve there head office if you are getting stuck with the store.

Sounds like you damaged the sensor glass, to me, by trying to clean it, actually its not the sensor it the glass in front of it  so not as expensive

Regardless of blame etc it sounds like you are being ripped off. A couple of years ago I had the sensor in my 40d replaced at a cost of just over £200. The price you've been quoted is more than a replacement camera.

Thanks for the replys

Having made numerous phone calls and left messages not one was replied to.
Finally spoke to someone at head office who had no grasp on customer satisfaction or care, basicly said you broke it so you have to pay even though I sent two images dated 10 days after I bought the camera clearly showing the mark still not good enough :bang: so back to the shop who to be fair were aleast sympathetic made a fews calls and apparently a new camera is on its way:clap: well done for seeing sense. I await the camera. what I can't understand is people who buy DSLR dont just make one purchase like you would with a simple point and shoot,we go back to expand our kit through lenses and flashes ect ect it's a hobby and people will spend good money on a hobby, I just don't think they get it at all.

Thanks

John

sounds like a result did you have to remind them it was their problem, or were they happy to replace without to many questions

Hi
No they flatly refused to accept any responsibility at all,it was only the threat of Trading standards and further action in the small claims court that any thing got done. Shocking service!!!
