Hi All

Just curious about this... but could those in the know please advise me as to what is the focal length of the widest angle lens one can use on a FF camera...?

e.g. does the Sigma 10-20mm work literally as a 10mm to 20mm lens on a FF cam...?

The sigma 10-20mm and the canon 10-22mm are both made for EF-S mounts and so won't fit on a full frame camera as the rear lens element protrudes too far and would catch on the mirror. It is possible to take apart the mount and replace it with an EF lens mount, and providing you don't zoom fully out then the lens will work - for the canon 10-22mm anyway, I'm not sure about the sigma. That said, the 17-40mm on a full frame would be almost as wide as the 10-22mm on a crop sensor which works out at 16mm equivalent, which is pretty wide.

If you wanted to go wider still, Sigma & Tokina both do a 12-24mm lens which I believe is compatible with FF cameras, and there are fish eye lenses which are even wider, eg the peleng 8mm is just one. I'm sure there's others which I haven't mentioned

Sigma do a 4.5mm circular fisheye lens I believe, which is about as wide as it gets and is compatible with FF bodies.

I use 14mm on a full frame body. It's rectilinear and not fisheye giving about 114 degree AoV.

Thanks all.

So, apart from fish-eye lenses, the widest lens on FF is around 14mm and on 1.6x crop cameras is equivalent to 16mm.

The reason I was wondering this is that I have very kindly been loaned an Olympus ED 7-14mm for the next week or so. I travel to Cornwall today for the weekend for Heathers rugby tour, and am really looking forward to putting this lens through its paces on Cornwalls landscape and clifftop scenery. I knew the x2 crop factor on the 4/3 system works in its favour for birding and longer focal length lens work, and so now understand why this lens has been built so it opens up to 7mm at the wide end (14mm FF equiv). I hadn't seen any other lenses (apart from fish eyes) at that focal length.

Many thanks for the info here folks, very much appreciated.

Will the Nikon 10-24mm not work on a FF body? at max resolution :)

You can use on an FX camera at full resolution, but you'll get one hell of vignette ;)

Actually I've been reliably informed that this lens will produce a full image on FX cameras from about 15mm onwards. I have to admit I've not tried it myself as I'm lacking an FX camera, but I would be hesitant about it given that the quality at the outer edges of the frame is likely to be lacking if used on an FX, if indeed it does give you full sensor coverage at 15mm or longer.

There's always those dark edges to look forward to/shout at lol

I would look into a better WA lens maybe in the near future with the intention of carrying it on when I upgrade to a FF body :)

Nikon 17-35/55mm f2.8 lenses be best WA on the likes of a D700 or D3?
