A bit of a long shot this, but I'm hoping one of you may be able to recommend a radio for my frail and elderly neighbour? Preferably, one that's not too expensive.

There are hundreds out there, but she needs one with an external antenna input as the signal strength in her flat is too low to use a built-in or telescopic aerial. There is a communal TV/Radio antenna system with a separate FM/DAB socket that she can plug into.

Any ideas?

Quite a while ago I got a FM/Dab radio for my elderly mother, I programmed in the stations that she wanted and at a press on a preset button she got the station she wanted. Think it was called PURE, great little radio and not costly at all.

I have hifi one and a portable but I don't know if the portable one has an external areal input. That could be the sticking point.

Is an internet radio an option?

I have an ex who loves them and gives them as presents :D You need an internet connection but if one is available they pick up just about anything from anywhere in the world.

Just had a thought.... Richer sounds helped me when I wanted technical info, if there's one near you maybe give them a call? They might know and in my experience they're more likely to know than the people at Currys.

That's a good idea Alan, I'll give them a call if no one here can recommend one. (y)

She has no internet BTW and couldn't afford it if she wanted it. :(

I looked at some portable dabs and none seemed to have an input but I thought one of those mini hifi boxes might be a possibility.

Googling got me here...

and they list a couple with sockets...

This is quite cheap..

You can't really see the back.

Would something like that be a possibility or maybe it'd be too complex.

PS.
Note that they say that with some of these if you take the aerial off there's an F type connector, and they detail a couple.

Thanks for having a hunt around Alan - I really appreciate that. :)

The biggest problem I have is that she is not very bright and is probably the biggest technophobe I've ever met. I'm trying to convince her to get a simple remote for her TV so that she just has volume, channel, mute and power, but she says she doesn't need it.

She only listens to one channel on the radio and she only watches one ITV channel on the telly.

Hmmm.

If she had a recent TV could she be coached to switch to channel 726 (or whatever it is) to listen to the radio though it?

My mother can't work a radio now but she can switch the TV to Smooth Radio.

Thanks, I did suggest that, but I couldn't make her understand that the TV works the same way as a radio. She's adamant it has to be a separate radio set. :headbang:

This might sound like a silly question but does she like cricket, I know plenty of old ladies who do, in which case try an get a radio with LW just a thought.

Have a look at Roberts.
I have a UnoLogic which has FM and DAB and presets and also has a pull out aerial and an auxiliary socket .I don't know what it's like in poor reception areas as DAB is very good in my area .But certainly have a look at Pure I have a clock radio and a portable both get DAB and FM and they are pretty good
