Thinking about going to New York USA next year for a week or so. While there may buy some photographic gear, like a light meter for example. How do I go about paying their sales tax and reclaimimg it. Also paying import duty and VAT back in the UK. I don't want to be taxed twice for the same things

Thank to all who answer in advance

sales tax is normally charged at point of sale. Its generally added to the ticket prices (unlike VAT) thats normally included. Don't know about reclaiming it though

Yes I was aware of USA sales tax but reclaiming it and not paying tax twice was really what i want to know

New York doesn't do sales tax refunds for tourists. Not all states and areas do.

You're allowed to bring in a certain amount without declaring for VAT. It's not something I worry about too much, especially if you're the kind of person not to worry too much about packaging.

The amount you are allowed to bring in is quite minimal if you are considering buying something substantial. From 0z last summer it was £400 I think. Just the right amount for a Wimberley head!
