advice for photography with a compact

This is my 2nd question today after registering yesterday...brill! I've posted this on the 'welcome forum' but not sure if that was the right forum so putting it here as well......I'm very much a novice and I have a Canon Powershot S60 compact point and shoot (have had for 3 years or so and it hasn't moved off 'auto'!). This looks like a great site with LOADS of info/advice on taking great photos.....I just wondered if there are sections that would be useful to look at for someone who doesn't have a DSLR or whether I just come across useful info as I am scolling through?
 
I try to remember always to have my Canon Powershot A570 in pocket when I go out.
Super little camera.

I tried to run before I could walk with digi cameras so went back from a Nikon D70 SLR to point and shoot. I used that until I got comfortable with photo editing and messing about with camera menus.

You'll find plenty people here willing to spend time giving you help.
 
Thanks for that. Yeah...I thought that I would really like to get 'into' photography so thought about getting a DSLR but my little compact can do soooo much more than I can that i definitely need to get my head around that first :) (I'm surprised my camera hasn't left me through boredom :) )
 
Keep at it, theres a guy on TP who takes some amazing shots with a point and shoot.

You can only get better!

Also, take loads of days out to other places / see things and take as many photos as you can!!
 
Had some amazing results with my Fuji F20 !
 
First have a read up on things like composition. Let the camera expose things, which will leave you to concentrate on framing the shot etc. Once you get good results from that, then start playing about with the other settings.
 
Thanks for that folks. I can certainly only get better! I need to get out and start shooting! Only reg'd here on Saturday - have already learnt how to find replies to my threads without scrolling through to find my original thread and have also realised that 'oof' isn't a spelling mistake! :) Need to learn how to add something other than a smiley face in 'quick reply'. This is on top of my camera skills! Is there anywhere on this site that I can see photos taken with a point and shoot?

No excuses whatsoever. and always remember.... YOUR CAMERA DOESN'T MATTER! :D
 
Don't know if I am supposed to post this here but I just wanted to ask....with flickr's advanced search, like you say ryank, I can search by camera and then look at photos taken with that particular camera...am I able to then ask the person who has taken the shot any questions?
