Maybe this is not the best place for this or not but need some help so thought this would be better than where I normally visit (Sports section)

I've been invited by my local American football team (who I take pictures for at home games for use on web and to sell) to take photos of their awards ceremony. The thing is, these guys do it proper i.e on a stage with stage lights and everything else and it's held at a local music venue.

Now, being a man of action shots, I have only a small idea of what to do. Obviously I don't want to use a flash (just as you wouldn't use flash for a gig) and I want to use a wide an aperture as possible but after that I'm not too sure, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also I do fear my gear is just not going to be up to the task. I use a Sony A200 however I can (and most likely will) get my hands on a A550. Lens wise I have a 18-70mm F/3.5 (kit lens) and a Minolta 50mm F/1.7 which I think can be used. So I'm I provably peeing in the wind in thinking I could do this or should the prime be the best one to go with.

The award ceremony is held in November so I'm trying to get in touch with the venue in terms of speaking to their photographer and possibly finding a night to have a bit of a scouting mission.

One of your main issues is how high is the stage?

Shots from below can make people look bigger than they are, and with something like this its good to be at similar heights.
