Advice filling pit in the garage

Have decided to convert the garage into a gym plus photo studio for personal use. Have a pit in the garage, may be the previous owner was a hobbyist repairing car. Need to fill in the pit and was thinking of measuring it and calling Tarmac to get a quote and have the concrete delivered.

Also thought of dropping a line here and was wondering if anyone's got a better idea. I am sure we have togs who may be builder tradesmen.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Best advice is don't fill it, I am sure it has a sleeper cover or similar, use it for storage !
 
if you do fill it, put hardcore in and only concrete the last 6 inches, save loads on the cost of concrete plus it can be broken out at a later date if needed (by next owner of house maybe)..
 
Well if you are sure you want to fill it then I would suggest, broken concrete blocks or rubble up to about 2.6ft below surface. Fill in to about 6" below surface with MOT Type1 scalpings and compact down. Finish off with concrete. Or you could cube up the void and calculate how much Type1 you will need to do it all to 6" below.

I would find a good chippy and get him to frame it out put in trap doors....excellent storage space!

dont fill it, the deciding factor in buying our house over another very similar was the pit in the garage, we maintain all our own cars and i have a small servicing business!!

get a chippy to frame it and put trap doors, with the handle built inot the flat (effectively) floor!

If I decide to go with the trap door and say a gym equipment like a stepper or a treadmill is lying on the trap door, how safe that would be? :thinking:

depends how much you pay the chippie:D

If you're not planning on using it just put flooring joists across it then floorboard it , shouldn't be hard to do, joist hangers that are designed to fit into brick or concrete are readily available

fitted with lights & a thick perspex cover :shrug:

Would look great having a lit floor :thumbs:
 
put the machine over it lengthways then the weight will be on the concrete either side ;)

and don't fill it in case you need to change your suspension in the rain (which I had to do 2 weeks after demolishing garage and paving over hole

I'm sure some framing can be made that would support a decent floor.

I'd love a pit in my garage - would make changing all my suspension bushes so much easier!
