Hi everyone,
I am trying to set up a business, I have the name but now I need a website. Does anyone know how is the best way to do this or how much it costs. Not exactly flush at the mo, that said don't mind paying to have one built.
All advice greatly received.

If you have your name then visit http://www.123-reg.co.uk to find a suitable web address for the name, if it's available. There's plenty more info on hosting costs on the site too (but shop around for better prices and services .. eg. server reliability etc) and even template based designs to use at a cost but I would steer clear of these as you dont have total control over them and can look very unprofessional.

*... look at similar businesses on the web. Many of them say where the site was built. You could then contact these people to get an idea of costs, procedures, etc.etc.
Good luck anyway

You also need to do some thinking about stuff like cash-flow and sales forcasting and tax and NI contributions and structure of the company (whether Limited, sole trader, LLP etc.) and insurance and ......

so think long and hard. I'm not trying to put the mockers on your plans, but there is much, much more to having a business than a name and a website.

Above all, be careful.

Cheers for the responses guys. I apologise if my initial thread was vague. I am setting the business up as a sideline to my main career. I do portraits in a similar style to 'Venture'. I just want to get a site up and running to help show off my work. I have the domain name just no site. Will try and get some images on here soon to get a bit of critique.
Thanks

and a GOOD accountant will save you sh** loads.
cant help with the webstuff. i,m a computor idiot:|, and my mrs built ours.
mark.

I've never yet met a 'good' Accountant; I've had a few that lost me (or my associated business) lots of money though! I'm sure there are good ones out there, but you never know do you?

Bit like Solicitors, you have to treat them all as idiots and let them prove they aren't before taking any of their advice seriously

But back OT - yep, being in business is almost NOTHING to do with your product

I've come across a few brilliant photographers who can't make a penny and far too many crap ones making a mint - the difference is the former are 'Artists' who are in business, the latter are 'Businesspeople' who just happen to be photographers

When people mention insurance they don't just mean for your equipment. Make sure that you have liability and indemnity insurance as well.

You may never need it, but if the day comes you really don't want to be without it!

Having a side-line business is great.

Good luck I hope it works out for you

Just remembered my website designer.

I used bludomain they were excellent and set everything up just as i needed it. The control panel for the sites are also quite intuitive and allow for you to add information and change images.

Prices start at only $100 which with todays exchange rates is pretty cheap.

We had three bad ones over 10 years and even took one to the FSA (and won!) but found a good one 11 years ago. They are like gold dust and brilliant. They even have a closed waiting list!
