Going to try something so i'm starting with replacing the filters ,what do you guys use :)

a filter is a filter is a filter..

in short, where ever is cheapest

Couldn't agree less. Gained near enough a meg of sync speed (from 3mb to 4mb) moving from the stock sky filters to the adsl-nation xf-1e :)

If you've got a particularly long lone or dodgy extensions it's definitely worth the tenner or so outlay.

Yup.. you get two sorts of filters. Passive and active. The Active tend to be the mouse tail types. They are far better than the passive ones......

my last post wasnt amazingly constructive, i'll rephrase (and apologise)..

while there are so called "high performance" filters available they have (ask google) very mixed results. reportedly the "best" filters (or at least the most consistant) appear to be the speedtouch filters which i think orange provide (or at least i think im still using one of mums old orange adsl ones).

personally i think its a bit like £100 HDMI cables giving a "better" picture. some people may not see an improvement, some will however was their old cable knackered.

My cable layout is ...

There are 3 plugs downstairs and one upstairs which is the one I'm plugged into just now with a an adsl filter (the mouse type) with no phone just the modem cable ,should I have a filter on the plug with the phone connected to it downstairs ?

My basic filter from Sky stopped the caller ID feature working on the phone line. I changed it to a Pluscom AMF-2 to correct this and gained 1Mb of download speed as a bonus.

You guys all talk about gain on your connection speed ,my max according to BT is 1.5mbps .

Talked to Orange representative on phone ,believe me it was frustrating and indeed strained conversation (not able to understand person on other end ...don't ya just deplore that),when i first signed up for Orange BB there was no mention of peak time dips in connection speed ,this guy on the other end of the line kept on about how i'm able to get speeds of 3mbps and i said no way ,BT have told me max is 1.5mbps ,this guy was adamant i was wrong .

The strangest thing about the whole time i was on phone, was that my connection speed was up to 2.7mbps ,then as soon as i put phone down the speed went back to what it's normally at 0.48ish .

Anyone explain how this could've happened ?

A failed or failing filter shouldn't have this effect but it is where I'd start my diagnosis.

I'd remove ALL telephonic devices from ALL sockets. Plug your modem/router/whatever into the master socket with a filter. Test your speed. Then test again with each filter you have in the house.
