Adobe is working on a mobile complement to Lightroom that will let you view and edit the RAW images on your computer from your mobile device. The app, which is still in the early stages of development, uses the lossy DNG Smart Previews new to Lightroom 5 to keep the space needed on your tablet to a minimum, and will use the same image processing model employed in Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw.

Sounds interesting?

Watched "The Grid", last night, when they announced this. They were very careful not to committ to anything.

A lot of it is based on the new image functionality, which is availabe on the lightroom 5 beta. Basically, you can store renders of your images, for use when you're not a your main pc and any changes will be synced.

Could be very useful, for things like doing picks, flags, keywords, metadata, etc. but I don't really see the tablet as being a really useful editing machine.

There are apps for that already in the AppStore. I tried them and they don't work very well even with small RAWs from my D600.

Looking at how much memory there is on the iPad and how fast is the CPU is. My dual-core Core i5 laptop with 4GB memory stuggles a lot with 24megapixel files from my D600. I am very sceptical the iPad can do it at all. Maybe in next generation?

Might be kinda cool to have the option, but can't see when i'd use it to be honest.

Even that would be awesome. Imagine sitting at work on your Monday dinner hour deleting all the duffers from Sunday's wedding. Little things like that would be a god send for all us weekend warriors :)

I tried to do similar thing on holiday with the iPhoto app. But each RAW file is so big, it eats up the iPad local storage in no time. Worst of all there's no way to say only import JPG's.

Now, I bring a netbook without its power brick. It is ONLY to make backups using its internal HDD. Then transfer JPG onto the iPad for viewing (eg. check focus, sharpness) in the hotel room.

So I think having standalone iPhoto/Lightroom features on iPad is completely worthless. But LR5's sync'd editing could be useful for lazy evenings on the couch.

You might be interested in the photosmith app. You can import images into it and whilst you can't edit, you can flag, rate, and apply a colour code just like Lightroom. Then you can sync these settings with Lightroom on your main computer. Useful for doing an initial choice edit on the road, although you are limited by your iPad memory. If that's a problem look into jail breaking your iPad and using a camera connection kit. With that you can transfer any type of files to and from almost any card or USB source (USB stick, even powered hard drive!)
