$420 a year for may sound cheap for CS5 when broken down into by month, but that is for a yearly fee. If you want to pay by the month, then it is $588. Not my idea of low cost. What happens the next year when you don't year when you decide not to carry on the subscription? You won't be able to use the software anymore, that's what. What happens if you take the monthly plan, then don't pay a month, yes, you guessed it, you can't use the program.

Adobe get all the benefits imho. At least if you buy CS5 for example, you have CS5 to use forever. You may not get any updates after CS6 arrives, but you can keep on using it.

I'm afraid I argree redhead17. With a new version of photoshop coming out roughly every 18 months this doesn't seem much of a saving, especially when the upgrade cost is less than the yearly cost of " renting" and as said you get to use it for as long as you like.
Another issue is bandwitdh, not everyone has a good internet connection, I have friends with no internet other than wifi dongle (they live too far away from networks) even with a good network things can slow down at peak times, no good if your up against a deadline.

Can't see anyone in their right mind taking it up!

Maybe it's time for them to acknowledge it's too expensive. I guess this is down to declining sales in an effort to generate income.

I think I read they were going from an 18 month upgrade cycle to a 24 month. At some point I can see them charging for updates between the updates to a new version. :bang: Then there will be a rebellion against them I think.

They obviously would like everyone to have 'cloud' based version which you pay for as you use, but even though that is the direction software companies would like to go, I don't think it is what the vast majority of users want. :cuckoo:

In the case of Photoshop, you may not use it much, but when you are learning you use it a lot. And of course, as has been mentioned, for the 'cloud' model to come anywhere near succeeding, you need everyone to have a 100% guaranteed (very) fast connection. And remember that's upload speeds as well, not just download speed. ;) No business can guarantee that, and not business can afford to rely on an internet connection for productivity.

For me it seems like a good idea. I can't justify buying the full version of Photoshop as I don't use it that much, say only 2 or 3 times a year, being able to get it for a month at a time would work out much more cost effective for me.

But for around the price of a months "rental" you could buy elements and have it for years.

That's what I've done already ;)

I looked at this figuring my PS trial will be up in a week or so and this might be a real option seeing as I rarely actually need PS but that cost is still too high.

As I can't justify the cost I have 2 options: pirate it, use GIMP. And the GIMP is currently winning, as I use it more the more I see it's pretty much just as good as PS bar a few small things that aren't really a huge deal (content aware fill and HRD Pro are all I can think of I'd use).

I can see that for a small number of users a monthly sub may work but for the majority I would think it's a non-starter.

I get the feeling Adobe are feeling the pinch and are casting around for way to increase business. There are better, more obvious, ways like reducing prices and supporting older versions instead of dropping them like a hot brick once they release an update.

I'm not sure why people are talking about cloud computing here - what Adobe are launching isn't cloud services. It's just monthly licensing, and you will be able to use it without internet connection (you just need to connect to renew your licence each month).

If it was cheaper and I didn't own Photoshop already then I'd consider it as an option.

It may not be cloud computing, but it is the thin end of the wedge. Get people used to paying monthly, and getting people to pay per individual use is not a great leap imho.

If you decide not to pay the next months subscription just after you've paid, then you will have a month to carry on using it. If your next subscription is tomorrow, and you decide not to pay, then tomorrow it stops working. :bonk: If you get my drift. ;)

Going down the same road as that robbing [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] Gates. Hopefully some enterprising company will seize the opportunity to provide a user friendly front end for the likes of GIMP and give Adobe the bloody nose they deserve.

I chose to "downgrade" from CS4 to Elements 9 which I use in conjunction with Lightroom and have yet to come across anything that I can't Coe with.
