Hi, I'm stuck out at sea for 4 months and away for Christmas and New year on Ops in the Persian Gulf with limited access to the internet.I I thought I would try to learn CS6 but can't move forward. Please could you help?

I am a Mac User....

Whilst trying to darken an area on an image by moving the mouse across it which is formed into a concentric circle I end up lightning it ???

I am unable to make the area darker. It looks like I'm spraying grey paint over the image. I'm working in Adobe RAW.

I have tried using the sliders but to no avail. I have experimented with pressing both the Cmd button and also the option key.

I really have no idea why I can't selectively darken a selective are in a RAW file image. Any ideas anyone ?

Many thanks for your help - Nick

In the RAW dialogue, click on the adjustment brush from the top menu to start. Make sure 'preview' is ticked or you won't see anything. Set the 'exposure' slide to, say, -1, adjust the size & feather and, well, draw. If the bit you draw over is lightening, you may have the 'exposure' slider set at a positive value. The 'grey paint' may be the mask. Try clicking 'show mask' and see if it vanishes.

Shout if this doesn't work.

Jon, many thanks for your help. A simple case of turning the Mask off. Everything is easy when you know how !!!

I'm going to spend the next 4 months trying to learn CS6. Roll on January when I'm home and can get my camera out again !!!

Cheers,

Nick

Yeah, knowing which button to press, and what the consequences will be, can really make a difference to your day.

Possibly more so in your job than mine...

Have you got any tutorial books on Photoshop? There's a good series by Scott Kelby, another by Martin Evening.

Yes I have the latter. An excellent book with very good DVD lessons. I never find the time ashore but at sea it's a great investment in time. I'm really enjoying it too. Thanks again for your help.
