Hi,

quick question that I hope someone can help me with. I've just checked the US Adobe website (the adobe website) and they are selling Adobe CS4 for 699$ that works out at approx 430 quid.

Can I order from the US web site as opposed to purchasing from the UK or am I breaking some form of policy (or maybe it will even prevent me). The reason I ask is because the same software is approx 550-600 quid in this country which I think is unacceptable for exactly the same software.

Cheers,

Mark

You can order it just fine. Do remember that you should be liable for import duty and expect to pay 15% (17.5% from January) on it before it clears customs on the way in to the UK. Sometimes that and the cost of shipping can wipe out any gains.

using it will probably breach the EULA - as it may say something along the lines of "only to be used in country of purchase" or have a location specific EULA.

i know for a fact that Adobe dont like me in the UK purchasing licenses through our US office for use in EU countries :(

Thanks for the advice, the vat/duty point is an interesting one as I'm only interested in the download edition so therefore physically nothing is being mailed to the UK.

Will be interesting to see how the UK gov tackles this one, will also check the EULA agreement as they probably get you on the upgrade.

Cheers,

I may be wrong, but the USA site won't let you purchase/download to a UK location. There has been a ton of grumbles on the Adobe Forums about their rotten pricing policy for countries outside the USA (Japan excepted strangely) and the fact of restrictions on non-USA downloads from the USA site.

Check though, you may be lucky.

Anthony.

Yes I think that's right. Anyways if you can wait until mid next year CS5 should be with us, and for mac users we should see a big speed increase, and hopefully a version of Bridge that works ;)

Thanks for the advice, just checking Amazon at the moment and its only 529 inc vat (soon to be 17.5), very tempting but never heard of this reseller called 'Byteback' so time to do some googling methinks ;)

Very true, however I created a US account and at that point it does let you order but I think its just a bit too dodgy to proceed. Just my luck if I try to activate the copy and it complains its a US product and an EU activation server or something.

I doubt very much that Adobe's US site will:

a) Let you order with a credit card registered outside the USA.

b) Ship to the UK. Incidentally, I noticed with interest that ordering a download is cheaper than the shipped product in the US (as you would expect) but £34 more expensive than the boxed edition in the UK - go figure that one out...

They guard their US/UK margins jealously, and I think you're going to be on a loser here unless you know someone living in the US who will order & pay for it, take delivery for you, un-box it (to fox customs) and post it to you. To save all the hsssle, I just ordered the UK version. I got a pretty good discount for upgrading from Elements and buying Lightroom at the same time.

The Adobe site won't let you use UK credit card to purchase it. Registering and activating this is absolutely fine as the software is the same. The only way around it if you have a US registered credit card (say on your company other office business address), then you can buy electronic version, download it and it will work just fine.

I went down that route for Lightroom - got it cheaper even including all the taxes then here in UK. Used my friend lining there to purchase it for me.

I do have a AMEX black card issued directly from the US - its only recently I've been receiving statements from an EU address. That may count but for the sake of 100 quid if this ByteBack is legit then I may as well order from there. :)

I have just purchased and now got CS4 extended. It clearly states in the license agreement which market it is authorised for, either for the USA or European and not both!
Not getting into the price argument, just passing on relevant info about adobe purchased from the usa for use in the UK. They won't let you!

If you are a student content removed - then you can get some amazin bargains at www.software4students.co.uk They send you a normal education pack out - got mine within the week.

As a part time student I was able to get CS4 design premium for my Mac at a fraction of the price - crica £250.

Be warned though - you have to email adobe with the college and course you are on - but they responded to me within the hour with the serial number for activiation.

Hi Fabs,

I can see why you removed that element of my post - but realistically, I only meant you may have a child/partner who is at college. You will also note my comment at the end of the post that you have to justify your purchase on an education licence to Adobe direct.

Apologies if this broke the forum rules (i'm new you know) - but thought the post would legitimately help some members - and perhaps persuade some members who are entitled to an education discount from possibly downloading it via a torrent / paying for a non-education licence, when it is more affordable to them than perhaps first thought.

Regards
Ian

Thanks for the update on this, in the end I got the full extended version as I couldnt be bothered with potential issues further down the line. I couldn't care less about tech support but with my luck the laptop will end up going bang and I then I would need to ring someone on the other end of the phone to perform a manual deactivation and so on... ;)

HI Razor,

I have that kind of luck too. Probably best choosing the route you did - hope you have as much fun and exploring as I have with PS. I would also recommend Bridge - loving it for cataloguing my stock before I get out in the cold again :-)
