Managed to find my very old disk of the first cs.
Is this perhaps a bit out of date. Or still fine to use.
Just bought my first slr. And am set to do a bit of editing

It should work fine, the only issue you might have is the newer cameras raw files will need to be converted as the camera raw in CS will be out of date (and not update for some years) if your working with jpegs it'll be fine.

It's a shame you don't have CS2 as Adobe are offering a discount on older upgrades till 15th March. I just checked their offer terms and CS isn't covered.

Depends what you want to do. IMO most things can be done with PS6! The new features are nice in CS5 but not essential.

Like swanseamale says you will need to convert RAW with something else (try Irfan View) but basic colour correction should work fine

CS is fine. Adobe mostly move things around and improve on the speed and ease of various techniques. I may use CS5.5 at the moment, but take it from someone who's been using Photoshop for nearly 20 years. It's all good! 3ed party applications will always help you cut corners.
