It's only important if you want to backup your photos and do not run any other kind of backup.
I have the Lightroom backup disabled because the whole drive is backed up weekly anyway.
er, it doesnt back up the photos themseleves, you need to do this manually by copying them to another location
it only backups up the lightroom catalogue. which you should back up too from time to time

thanks for the above info..
i dont need a backup as i run an exterior hard drive all the time on auto backup and everything on C: is there and i load my pics direct to it..my main hard drive is only 60Gb!!
how do i disable please...
a pleasure to get some clear info
cheers

Do you backup your system disk and program files? I belive the LR catalogue holds all image development changes as the process in LR is non destructive. The photos you run on your external drive will not be edited.
Im happy to be corrected, I backup my catalogue on SAN as dont want to be in a position of having pics and having to re-edit.
But you only have 1 copy of your photos, ie the originals on your external drive. If/when that finally packs in you have lost everything.
You really should have at least 1 other copy of the originals and the LR catalogue. Preferably 2 or more, one of those 'off site' as well.
you have got me thinking there...i have another hard drive caddy and can manually load it up with photos as well
or just by another self loading external hard drive...the one i have cost £39 for 250Gb
what do you think?
really i need to whittle down all the turds and trash before doing a final save

what about a solid state drive then...may put one in the caddy but are a bit ££££ just now
I'd use it ASAP to make a backup copy of your photos & catalogue.
You could use something like xcopy and schedule it to copy new or changed files across to it on a regular basis.
Solid state drives are not really suitable for backup,
They are generally to small, and when they fail they are likely to do so suddenly and with no warning.
just got another 250Gb exterior drive to do a complete backup to the backup..
you know what i mean...thanks for that heads up...never struck me i could lose the lot
cheers

Hi everyone - I'm a long time lurker but thought I would finally get involved with the forum.
Anyway, in response to your original question, I think that you should definitely be using the catalogue backup when you exit Lightroom. If your catalogue gets corrupted (as mine did) you are in danger of losing all your edits.
With an automatic back up to external drive there is then a risk that you could back up the corrupted catalogue to your external hard drive so you have no way of retrieving it. By doing the catalogue back-up at least you have peace of mind that you won't lose more than, say, a week's worth of editing.
