Reading a thread on another forum, I noticed the mention of the Adobe Lens Profiler for their family of products.

I understand it's something to do with making PP corrections for the light abberations caused by some lenses.

I know there is an Adobe free download for the profiler, but does anyone use it or can tell me more about what it does?

That's about right. It will allow you to create a custom profile of your lenses to automatically correct their geometric distortions, chromatic aberrations and vignetting in Adobe Lightroom 3 or Photoshop CS5.

It should be particularly useful for correcting tricky geometric distortions like moustache distortion, for example. The old Lens Corrections filter in PSCS would only correct barrel and pincushion distortion.

A similar sort of facility is provided by DxO Optics Pro. DxO claim their solution delivers superior results (and it does quite a few other things that PSCS5 and LR3 do not).

The User Guide might help

Thanks for the help Rob.

The DxO programme looks to be well worth the investment.

FWIW, I've always found DxO very slow when I've tried it (there's a free trial or certainly used to be) and it's a bit pricey for full frame bodies at least. Nice results though.

The cheap alternative is PTLens which has a fairly extensive coverage of body/lens combinations. I've been using it for a while.

I am thoroughly enjoying LR3's built in corrections, however. Especially as it works directly with RAW data and is non-destructive, so you can go back and tweak the adjustments if you change your mind later. A major advantage over all the other solutions if you're using Lightroom in your PP workflow.
