Iam trying to put a photo book together and ive got a few scanned film images that I want to use.

Ive cropped the size to remove the blank white around the photo, I need to enlarge the photo somewhat. Will doubling the size be ok. What will it look like in print?

If you're scanning prints then just re-scan at a higher resolution - so if you've a 6x4" shot, that you've scanned at 300dpi, just re-scan it at 600dpi and it'll be good for 12x8" print. If you're scanning negs/slides, then work at something like 2400dpi minimum, and you'll get image sizes comparable with your 400d.

The point to bear in mind is that Photographic print paper is pretty poor when it comes to resolution. It doesn't need to be particularly good as it's designed to be viewed not enlarged. Plus if you have a textured surface then that will spoil the sharpness of the scanned print.

Best thing to do is to scan as suggested at around 600dpi. Then look at the sharpness of the print .Only you can decide if the image is sharp enough for what you want
