My phone line it would seem is incapable of handling much more than 1 meg broadband
I have had the same router for about 18 months
(BT Voyager 2110)
The "stats" tell me that it is runnning at (DS / US) 1152/288 Kbps. This has always been constant and never seems to fluctuate.
there is usually at least 1 laptop running "wireless" from the same connection. Sometimes there can be 3 but thats quite rare.
The download speeds seen to be getting slower and slower
So my question is, do routers "wear out"?
Or, is there, /or if so, would a faster one help, ( router) if such a thing exists?

nah they don't wear out
but what does happen is more of your neighbours get broadband
and (your share of) the line itself gets slower
try it at 3 in the morning when your neighbours are asleep
 
I'm by no means an expert but I managed to gain about 1M by upgrading the Firmware on my router, and that's about 2 years old.

Either that or it needs a new Flux Capacitor... :D
 
Also you need to be sure that you are on a protected network.
Otherwise some sneaky neighbors could use your connection for free.
This could make your downloads slower if they are using the connection at the same time.

From what I can gather you have a BT broadband connection, usually the routers are sent out protected from them but its wise to check.
 
Thanks so far guys, I know that its "protected" and no other b****r can get at it apart from those that are supposed to.
its actually tesco.net via a BT line.
I did a firmware update ( well someone did it for me actually :D) about 3 months ago, perhaps that would be worth looking into again though
The early morning trial might be worth ago too :thumbs:
 
Did the speed start getting slower after the firmware update? Maybe your router didn't need to be updated.
 
..and dont forget to clear your temp internet files and cookies :lol:


Sorry, private joke, someone some friends I used to know was totally convinced that doing the above [useful though it is to do] solved any and every computer related problem, regardless, ["crashed hard drive? clear your temp...." you get the idea] and would quote it religiously to the point where we had no option but to use it as a slighly micky taking catch phrase. :nuts:

No it did actually boost it for a bit.
I am beging to wonder though I have had tesco for a longtime. first with PAYG then dial-up then broad band
each time the connection got slower I upgraded. I wonder if Tesco is actually now "oversubscibed" if thats possible ?

Good call! I only updated mine as I noticed the update included support for higher line speeds.
 
Another thing is to check that Tesco has not changed it's service.
I was with Pipex for a while who were very good they then introduced a system that limited the download speeds of all customers between certain hours. (I left them after this)
They never sent out any correspondence to say that they were changing but did put a notice up on the web pages. (Not sure if this is still in place)
Maybe Tesco have introduced something similar.

But it is more likely to be what mmcp42

Check this websites forums out about your provider. There may be people with the same problems and advice

Thinking about it, the Mother in Law has BT Broadband and I've noticed there's definate throttling in the evenings.

Have checked but can't find anything :shrug:
It does seem slower between about 5pm - midnight Week days and weekend of course, when I get on it during the day it seems to be OK
Now the interesting bit... I have just run back through my account and it "seems" that when I signed up it was for 516K
"unlimited" but as I said previously it runs
@ (DS / US) 1152/288 Kbps.
Not that I really understand, I assume that I have 1 meg broadband ?
 
OK... sorry cobra, I was being dim, I just went and dug out my original modem, also a BT Voyager model, the 105 as supplied by UK OnLine. We started with a half meg connection then eventually upped it to a 2 meg. After several months I noticed it was peakng at 1.1 [although it had run at 2.2 for the few months before that] and often dropping back down to half a meg, so I called ukonline, who reset something their end...great, for about half an hour, before it dropped again. Called them again and they were a flummoxed as their stats were showing all was well and I was actually getting more than 2 meg.

So, after some discussions, I said I would check the phone point, and try a different modem. Phone point seemed ok, so popped across the road an borrowed a neighbours netgear modem router, wired it in and hey presto, 2.2 again. I called ukonline again, and they offered to supply a new modem, but as that was the time I was about to go wireless anyway, I declined, as they would only replace it like for like [ie, just a modem, not a modem router and certainly not a wifi one]. I went out and got a dlink wireless modem router, and all was well, eventually upgrading further to an 'upto 8 meg' connection.

So, its not unfeasible that it is a modem/router problem. If you can borrow one from somewhere for an hour, it may well be worth trying just in case.

Yeah, I've noticed that with my M-I-L too. Normally it's my hands around her neck ;)

Cobra - as I recall, BT (and by implication, all other ADSL providers) doubled all broadband speeds to a minimum of 1 Mbps in an free upgrade a couple of years back, and so very few places (line length notwithstanding) are still on 512kbps.

Sounds like a throttling issue to me, although it's always worth trying a different router.

Thanks LL yep I did clear out my temp files and cookies :lol: borrowing a router is a good idea :thumbs: now who do I know taht won't miss theirs for a while <evil :D>

Just run though a "dummy" up-grade, though the BT line checks say that my line will "Now" handle 2.5 meg
Tesco say that it won't and the line will need to be upgraded before I can up-grade.
Second question with a 2 meg connection the upgrade is a 10gig / month limit will this cause any problems
under "normal usage" ? :shrug:
ie no dvd or simlar download

10GB a month averages at 330MB a day. A 1 Mbit line (upload and down) transfers about 136 kB/sec, 7.3MB a minute, 440MB an hour. If you're not a 'sharer', you should be fine :thumbs:

Trouble is ADSL speeds are dependant on so many things like line length and quality and as already mentioned contention ratio how many people are using the same line to the green box at the end of the street (or wherever it maybe)

Also a further problem in MK is BT in there wisdom laid aluminium cable to a large part of MK which is not as resilient as copper core cable.

I am lucky I do have copper apparantly. One trick a friendly BT eng did for me was to remove the ringer wire on my master socket, this gained be around 1Mb, the ringer circuit can cause a lot of interference to ADSL.

This of course has a downside that none of the phones will ring, but ADSL filters have there own ringing circuit, so as long as you have filters on all phones won't be a problem.

Would be a good idea to re connect when and if you move.

I will try and find a guide to removing the ringer wire if you fancy tackling it, and post back.

Did you hear ( in the local press ) some months ago that MK is supposed to be getting FREE wireless BB as a " beta trial"
type of thing? I can't remember how long ago this was but probabley 6 months or so back

I did hear something (was longer than 6 months ago i think) that pipex were going to be trialing something i signed up for it on there website but heard nothing since.

Don't know what exchange your on in MK but mine Bradwell Abbey is going to be upgraded to the 21cn in Nov 2008, so that should improve things for me... maybe

21cn (in case you don't know) is the countywide upgrade to fibre optic cables to the exchange but will still be the same old cables from exchange to the house.

Thanks for the info Mark I didn't know about the update.
I have just found my local exchange ( :thumbs:) and its the one in fenny stratford has to be a good 1.5 miles as the crow flies, God knows how far that is a the "cable runs" though :shrug:
 
you can usually double the as the crow flies distance at the least
