Not for this site. This is OK. Most places I go to are OK - apart from local newspapers!!!
Another site/forum I go on for a different topic is swamped with ads. Even paid subscribers get them.
So I'm looking for an ad blocker that I can set just for that specific site.
I'm running Firefox and have looked at their list but there are so many and they all prommise the earth.
Anyone got any recomendations for an ad blocker that I can use just against one site?
 
I run Ghostery on my Mac. You cant confgure it for individual websites but for trackers and adware. Simple and easy to install and configure . Windows version available as well I think. You can also select "Trust Site "
 
Just realised I use my phone too I see Ghostery is available for Android.

Downloaded Ghostery onto my phone. Once I realised how it worked - I'm not very good with techy stuff - it started longing away. Just what I wanted.

IMHO ublock Origin is all most people need. uMatrix (by the same developer) is also good if you want a more advanced deny by default approach. Both are highly regarded.

Generally speaking the less browser extensions the better these days as they have been increasingly used as a vector of attack. I don't see what Ghostery will add over ublock Origin and it doesn't have the greatest history despite different ownership and recently going open source.

Another, arguably, better approach than browser extensions are things like Pi-hole and pfBlocker. Pi-hole is pretty easy to setup now, you can even buy it pre-installed on a Raspberry pi, plug that box into your router, configure your DNS setup and away you go.

The biggest advantage of the Pi-hole/pfBlocker approach is it operates at a lower level, therefore it will block ads and undesirable things on all your computers/devices in one fell swoop, all configurable from one interface.

I put Ghostery on my phone and it's fine but has no refresh function that I can find. I've just got to work round that. I didn't realise that it is in effect a separate browser. So, I have just set it up to view the one forum where the ads are PIA. The rest I view "normally".

On my pc I downloaded Ghostery but couldn't initially see where it was. So I downloaded Ad block plus. Then I found Ghostery but I'm not sure I need/want it on PC but now I can't find how to get rid of it!!!

If you are using Firefox, Ghostery should have installed under Add-ons. If you want to get rid of it (or any other extension) you can open the Add-ons Manager in Firefox by click on the menu button, then "Add-ons" and there you can remove any extensions you wish. Alternatively CTRL + SHIFT + A will also bring up the Firefox Add-ons Manager (on Windows).
 
Thank you again. Yes, I have found it and deleted it. I'm not very scientific in these things - I just keep pressing buttons until I see what I want!
 
If you're at all technically minded, a Raspberry Pi running Pi-Hole; it works as a DNS server that blocks advertising and tracking at the domain level. If you can turn off the DCHP server on your router, the Pi-Hole can also fulfil that role too so all the devices that connect to your network end up with adblocking automatically.

You can always run it in parallel with OS or browser level tools as they don't conflict and have different benefits.

Unfortunately I don't really understand any of that!
I "think" I'm sorted now so wont dabble too much in things that are way beyond my pay trade:D

Damn you. Just spent £60.

Currently run Adblock but can only run it on the PC. Pity it doesn’t seem to kill Facebook sponsored posts.
 
AdBlockPlus & Ublock (99% firefox, and the rest of browsers when need testing websites etc.). Mac and Windows.
 
Facebook ads can be dealt with using an add on called "Facebook Purity", it works a lot better than it sounds

There's another way of running Ghostery (and uBlock Origin, Adblock Plus etc.) on Android you might prefer - instead of downloading the standalone blocking apps, install Firefox and, within the Firefox app, go to the Add-ons menu and search for the well-known ad blocking extensions or browse the Ad blockers section. Installing extensions works in much the same way as it does on the desktop browser. As with all add-ons, make sure you are installing the extension you intended and not something dubious with a similar name! The user count given for every extension can be helpful here - the genuine big name ad blockers have millions of users.
 
Just received my Raspberry Pi. Half an hour later and I have a network wide ad blocker.
Why have I not come across this before? Thank you (whomever mentioned it above)
