When photographing to obtain green-screen effect and replace the backdrop with another image, how important is the actual colour of the green backdrop.

Will most shades of green, or indeed blue work in a similar way?

It can be any colour, but green / blue have good separation from normal skin tones so are most easily used.

Cheers David. Thought that may be the case from what I have read. Just getting into this area as we speak. Off to shoot some backgrounds.

Do you use any specific software for green screen processing if you do it?

Thanks Dave, I think the Chroma Key works best of all from an editing point, but just hedging my bets where other colours are not actually 'Chroma Key'

Very interesting this processing. off to shoot some additional backdrops this morning.

It also needs to be properly lit, and lit so theres as little "spill" of the green/blue light on the subject as possible.

Thanks Wayne, I had picked up on 'spill' problems that could exist elsewhere. In addition to the Key light on the subject, a hair or back light would help this in addition to a reasonable distance (6' +) positioning the subject from the backdrop.
