whats your fave action affect?

post a before and after shot.

I like to see what actions do to photos to give me ideas for edits as im fairly new to photoshop.

Hello, Danger House, what you mean exactly?
I always thought Actions is the set you set up on your own by separate steps.
(unless you download it from someone, who already made Action set on his own taste)
Or maybe im missing something :)

Actions can be very useful in a large number of situations, I have quite a few 'stand-alone' actions and others where I have combined various effects, both in Photoshop and OnOne Phototools. The shot below was taken with one of my actions in mind which I have called Evening Romance, this combines a contrast curve, warming up to emulate the evening sun and adding glow. When I saw the location and pose I knew what I was going to do with the shot come PP time.

1. As exported from LR having been cropped. It's an okay shot but lacking any va-va-voom and it needs some work done to lift it.

2. Having applied the action the difference is plain to see and is getting near to the shot I envisaged when I took released the shutter.

3. As I said above it needs something else which in my opinion is a bit of blurring to give the softer, dreamier look which is exactly what the bride wanted - in her words "romantic photographs".

Obviously it is difficult to portray it fully here due to the size of the images but the big version looks fine and they ordered a large canvas.

I'll go and have a root around and see if I have any other examples.

I have various actions that I've set up myself to save time. Vignetting, skin smoothing, soft focus, resizing for web, watermarking, cross processing. I also have a plugin suite which I guess is just a set of actions as well. My most commonly used of these is the noise removal plugin. I wouldn't say I have a favourite though.

Your correct in saying you make them yourself, but you can also save the action and then share it as an .ATN file with others. Theres litterally thousands about for free, and lots of bought ones, check out the TLR actions (free) and other popular ones are Kubota and Totally radical actions (both you buy) I suspect if you ask Hacker nicely enough he may send you his action. I have a ton that I have either made or downloaded at one time or other, a google search for photoshop actions will keep you busy for a while.
