Anyone had their Achilles torn?

I've done mine over the weekend and been put in one of those big plastic boot casts, won't know for sure exactly what's what until I attend the fracture clinic on Thursday but after exams at A and E on Sunday that was the diagnosis.

Looking on the net it seems I could be 'cast' for anything up to 8 weeks initially, just wondering if anyone had experience of same from a non athletic stance like myself, i.e. silly old git...ta
 
Not exactly the same but I suffered from tendonitis in the Achilles and fighting through the pain barrier in a bid to get it better through exercise was a big no-no - so it was down to rest and suitable footwear to minimise discomfort when walking (I had no cast). It depends on your age but you will probably have to take it steady well beyond the initial 8 weeks - I'm 60 and it took 3-4 months to settle and 6 months to disappear completely.

Aye, i'm 50.
Been hoping it maybe isn't torn but I think i'm kidding myself,even at that , what you say Pete is just as bad as a tear by the sounds of it.

Is there a glue factory for thoroughbreds Llamaman? If so, i'll def' not be rendered down in there, lol
 
I had an accident at work over 20 yrs ago, broken leg & tissue damage inc a damaged Achilles. I was fully `potted up` from foot to thigh.
After a few weeks recovery I went to the physio terrorist a couple of times, but it's never been the same & I don't have as full movement as before the accident. Never any pain though.
I suppose I could have asked about surgery, but as I'm not an athlete or runner etc, it's never really bothered me.

Hope yours isn't too bad after all. (y)

You say tear so maybe slightly different to my experience.

I have witnessed, and heard, two people snap their Achilles tendon. Both were playing badminton and sounded like a very loud crack. The first one was a nurse, and despite his knowledge, tried to stand up and walk. He was in plaster for 6 months. The second one was many years later, but I remembered the earlier incident and insisted that the guy did not move and called ambulance. He recovered much quicker, but it was still many months.

Hopefully, yours is only (only, doesn't seem the right word) a tear and will recover quicker. Good luck.
 
I didn't hear anything as i was inadvertantly caught up in the mosh pit at a punk concert :banana: just went to walk to the side and it felt like i had a 'dead leg', it was of course very sore but i didn't realise that it could've been my achilles at the time.
It was on Sunday morning with no respite i gave in to swmbo and let her take me to hospital.

No fool like an old fool...:rolleyes:
 
Lots of rest and some physio followed by exercises took 4-6 months and still get the odd pull pain with it. Take it easy which is hard to do and rest the leg.

It's a very painful injury mate that I suffered as a footballer. Around six weeks off then light running etc before kicking a ball in around 8. It's certainly something that can 'go' again so no jumping or extreme climbing for a while.
 
Hopefully a proper diagnosis tomorrow as to whether it's actually 'gone'.
 
Yep, a ruptured Achilles, next app' in 4 weeks only to remove one of the wedges beneath my heel, then another 2-4 weeks strapped in the boot.
