I think my laptop's about to give up the ghost. I'm looking round at possible replacements (laptop again due to lack of space for a tower) and I wondered if anyone had had any experience of Acer or Lenovo?
Are they reliable, or is it better to stick to makes like Toshiba, HP, Sony etc?

Lenovo are the old IBM (the thinkpads are anyway) and are really well built.

What will the laptop be used for? If it is travelling around with you lots and get abuse, get a Lenovo thinkpad.

I can't speak from a technical point of view, but the acer laptop I've had for the last 5 years has worked perfectly. As long as you don't overload it with unnecessary programs to slow it down you should have no problem at all. I don't have any experience of the lenovo laptops but they did get very good high rating on the gadget show recently if that helps at all.

Thanks Dale and Nick.
I don't need it to be easy to carry about, just something I can pack away easily as space is limited. Pretty much all I use it for is photography, storing music and for using the internet. Ideally I'd like it to have a good size memory. I'm just looking at what options are out there. I've never used either of these brands, but from what you've both said I'll take a closer look at them

:-)

Just got the Lenovo B590 (well, 3 weeks ago) from Dabs, £335.98. It's gone up a little since I bought it. Well pleased with it. Great for photo's, runs faster than any of my last lappies.

All our work laptops are lenovos, you might want to look at ones that offer the best screen quality as you will be using it for photos.

We have an old Acer lappy running Xp. Semi retired now due to age and obsolescence but it still works fine (including the optical drive/writer). We also have a Lenovo Yoga semi convertible running Win8 but that's too new to make any reliability call on. If the new lappy will be running Win8, might I suggest that it's a touch screen one - Win8 is far better as a touch screen interface than a mouse one!

wow - thanks for all your help with this :-)

Nod - I've not used windows 8 before, but I did some reading and I know what you mean about the touchscreen stuff. Wouldn't that lead to having fingerprints and smears all over the screen though? And would that make it more difficult to edit photos? (also, I'm much more at home with an old fashioned mouse - the touchscreen on my phone drives me crazy)

Not sure TBH! I don't use this machine (or any laptop/tablet etc) for PP, I leave that to my desktop 'puter. Yes, the touchscreen collects fingerprints but text etc is still easily visible through them. You can use Win8 with a mouse but IMO it's at its best as a touchscreen UI.

I've had both an Acer and a Lenovo. My Acer lasted about 2 years before I had to get it replaced. The hard disk failed once, I got it repaired and a few months later it failed again. I called it a day after some advice.
Replaced it with a Lenovo which I have had for just under 2 years now and it is still running as quickly as the day I bought it (my others; a Dell and an Acer, started to slow down after about a year along with other problems). I'm impressed with it and would have no hesitation in recommending them or getting another.

Lenovo make the best laptops by a fair margin. I've used a number for work and now use them for personal use.

The W510 with the 1080p IPS high-gamut screen was incredible, sadly a work machine I couldn't use for photo editing!

The W510 you quoted, is that an Acer? I couldn't find a Lenovo with that reference number.

R - thinkpad budget
T - thinkpad solid (mid)
W - thinkpad OTT
X - compact/convertible

I don't really rate Lenovo laptops as any better than most others....... BUT if I had to buy a new laptop it'd be Lenovo, simply because at heart there must be some IBM blood left in there somewhere.

My T41's have been going strong since 2004/2006, one is even in use 24/7. Before that I had a 1998 Thinkpad 770x, running windows 98 and even that still works now (albiet with some HDD chatter).

Lenovo don't perform better, won't make anything better.

They will however last.
