Not even 2 months ago I bought Acer Timeline T3810 (great laptop by the way with over 6hour battery life and weight under 2kg :) )

Received this email today... :

It has come to our attention that certain Acer Aspire Notebooks may overheat under specific conditions. Acer is therefore voluntarily instituting a safety recall for these products.

The affected units are Acer Aspire models AS3410, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG manufactured prior to September 15, 2009. In the affected units the microphone cable may overheat when extreme pressure is applied repeatedly to the left palm rest. As a result, the unitҳ case may become deformed and the system may malfunction.

Acer has voluntarily instituted a safety recall program to proactively replace the microphone cable in the affected units to eliminate any risk of overheating.

So I've checked if my laptop shall be serviced...and it should be

So of course I will let them know and ask for collection...

Shall I ask for some kind of compensation for this ?
maybe an external dvd or something.....what would you do guys?
thanks

You can ask.

But it won't be any more likely to happen than if your laptop went faulty and had to be repaired.

Personally I would be praising the manufacturer I chose for highlighting the issue to all customers and giving the option for repair. It's shocking the amount of design flaws more significant that this that get brushed under the rug.

you wont get any compensation for something like this. There is no grounds for them to need to. They made an error and are rectifying it for free which is decent enough of them! :)

Why would you even expect compensation? This company are just being careful on your behalf and now you want them to pay you too? I really struggle to understand this kind of "something for nothing" attitude and suspect it's the same one that keeps driving up insurance premiums for those of us who make no claims. Nothing has gone wrong for you yet but you want Acer to put a financial band-aid on a non existent wound. You should be ashamed of yourself.

FTR, we used to have Acer laptops and 2 of the 3 did require repairs within the warranty period - they organised collection and delivery via a courier whch they paid for, so you should be ok on that as a recall would come under the same category.

There is no need for compensation in this matter
Acer has voluntarily instituted a safety recall program
which means you dont have to send it for repair if you dont want to but if you do then they will arrange for collection etc...

The same thing happens with a lot of cars, I remember getting a letter from ford regarding replacing the handbreak cable a few years back. Either you get it done or you dont and its as simple as that.
