Evening All,


I have had my 5742g from new since December 2010. It was fine up until December last year. When I first got it, it was like a rocket compared to my old laptop. Very quick and responsive. But in the last 3 months (since the warrenty ended) The scroll on the mouse has stopped working. It freezes once or twice a week occasionally more. (Froze about 1hr ago and also froze yesturday too!) I have backed up the laptop once a month since December as it seemed to be getting worse since then. Then earlier this month I was playing Football Manager 2012 and whilst playing I got a Blue Screen up and was up and gone very quick. All i read was "windows system has crashed and will shut down". I've looked into the blue screen and it seems like its the begining of the end. :thumbsdown:

Can anyone give me any help on this?

As you say you have a backup, if you also have the install disk might be worth re installing the OS and see if it is any better.

Also have a look in the event viewer to see if there are any reasons for the error.
 
Computer slowdowns are (usually) the user. The problem is when you install software, often other stuff is installed alongside, and depending on what is being installed can bloat the system. It can be a hardware problem, but something like a scroll on a mouse (I assume external mouse) would point to a software issue. If it's an external mouse, you could try it on another machine.

Very difficult to diagnose without the machine in front of me, but I'd be 95% certain it's something you've installed at some point.
 
I'm typing on a tablet so I will summarise what I would try to resolve and you can ask if you need anything more in depth.

As said event log is a good start to see if there is anything obvious.
Since the PC is blue screening you will want to make sure that creating a minidump is enabled
If it already is then you might find that you already have .dmp files being created and these may show you if it is a particular driver file crashing the PC.. perhaps it is related to the mouse but don't let that cloud you.. it may be totally seperate.

Now reading the dmp files is not straight forward but it is easier than it used to be and I will post a good link after this.

The next thing you could try is to find out from device manger what brand your hard drive is and download the diagnostic utility provided by the manufacturer. You should be able to run a short drive self test which will indicate errors.. any bad sectors and the disc is toast.. you can repair errors but it is a indication that the drive is failing and you should not rely on it.

Between the event log, minidumps and hdd diagnostics you should be able to source the cause of the bsod.

As said this is a vague summary of steps, I and I am ssure others can offer further advice as required.

Cheers for the info. Im at work atm but will have a good look when I have my laptop infront of me.
 
Could even be dust sucked in by the cooling fan that's caked on to the heatsinks causing the CPU to overheat... have a look at the fan through the grilled and optionally get the can of air duster out...
 
OP, re-reading your post again on my computer I see you said that the BSOD flashed away very quickly.. this means your PC is set to auto restart after failure..

In XP and Win 7 this can be stopped by opening up system properties (start - run - sysdm.cpl) and choose the advanced tab. Choose startup and recovery settings and disable automatic restart on system failure. This will also tell you where to find the Minidump files should you choose to get them debugged. I can pm you an address to mail the dmp files if you want them read.
