Hi I'm very new at this forum thingy but learning! I have 2 questions:
1) is there any form of accreditation for general photographers i.e. family photos, children etc?
2) is there such a thing a plagorism in photography? I ask as I look at many images to get inspiration for my work but wonder where do you draw the line?

Don't know if it's classed as an accreditation or not (as I'm not a member) but you could join the RPS which involves submitting a portfolio of images that must meet a high standard to get accepted.

As for plagorism, I think if you are just taking inspiration from other photographers then you'll be fine but if you set out to try and replicate multiple examples of a particular photographers work then I'm sure they'd see that as a form of plagorism.
 
Thanks that's really helpful. I am too use to written stuff where every idea has to be sourced etc etc.
 
Plagiarism means nothing in a court of law, its only something measurable in Schools/Colleges and Universities.

As far as i am aware, the only copyright infringment on someone elses photo is to take a direct copy of that photo and sell it or use it as your own.

When you take a photo, no matter how much it loos like someone elses the copyright is yours as YOU have taken the shot. Paintings are different as an exact copy is called a forgery, and that is a whole different matter.

I agree but I'd expand on that - you might be standing in exactly the same spot as another photographer has done when taking a shot (extremely unlikely) but if your image is noticeably different by virtue of factors such as framing, lens choice, depth of field, lighting etc. then your capture is as valid as anyone else's and it's up to people viewing both to decide which they prefer.

As said already, certainly don't attempt to recreate another image if you prefer to avoid trouble.

I wonder how many folk commit plagiarism at the big tourist sites around the world.

Take the shots you want and stop worrying about what others think.

I have a City & Guilds in photography and I am still not very good, my point is just because you belong to an organisation dosnt make you good, if I wanted a good photographer I would look at there work.

Plagorism, well we all are inspired by other stuff so take what you want, you cant copywrite a view etc
