Accessory add on grips, do you love them or hate them ?

I have the 40D and have often wondered how it would feel with a grip added so I decide to place a wanted add.

I was contacted by a new member, Hazmo, who offered me one in mint condition at a bargain price including delivery, even sending it on approval before he received the payment :thumbs:.

Anyway, when I attached it I immediately thought it would be too heavy and bulky with my walkabout 24-105L , how wrong I was!!. after a lttle while It just felt so right with the extra weight and a lot better to handle as well as the benefits of having the controls on the top in the vertical (portrait) position.

I have a feeling it is now on for good :)
 
Grips are like Marmite - you either love them or hate them.

I love Marmite.

I hate add-on grips.

Have one on my 40D, never comes off and would not want to use it without, find it ballances the camera perfectly.
 
agree...have one on my A350,and balances great when i have either the 70-200 or the 24-70,but isn't out of place when one of my other lens is attached.i've borrowed an A300 off my daughters friend to shoot my brothers wedding tomorrow,and by comparisson it doesn't feel quite right without a battery grip........
 
I have one on, full time. Doing mountain bike events, I would have a very sore arm if I didn't.

Instead, I have a sore neck, from the extra weight :lol:

I hate them. Had one for my Canon 400D, hated that.
Thought I'd like to try one on my Sony a300, and I hate that also!!
Luckily, I just sold it on ebay :woot:

Oh and I love Marmite too :D
 
My D300 and S5 Pro are always with grip.

Just feels soooooooo right.

Marmite is as right as grips are wrong.

Is there anyone that likes Marmite and grips ? They seem to be mutually exclusive so far.
 
Some look better than others, I mean, functionally they are great but often they look like a badly built flat roofed kitchenette extension.
Somebody posted a shot of a 40D with a grip the other day, dunno if it was after market or what, but it was bladdy awful, I kinda thought manufacturers would build them to follow the contours of the body without obvious joins, but some of them are hideous.
Not that how a camera looks has any bearing on its operation...mind.
I gotta say pro body's do look the nutzz in comparison.
 
I Transfered my grip from my 20D to my 40D and when usiging the 20D today itjust didn't feel right. I may think of getting a second one for the 20D.
 
I dunno much about Canon, but I had a skirt round and it seems the 40D grip is a bit of an ugly duck, maybe some of the other more recent body's have nicer intergration, I dunno.
Anyway, they can do it, the EOS3 film camera seems to be the benchmark, nobody seems to like the look of the 40D + grip either.

love the grip makes my lenses handle better, (i do remove it when i go round places like Disney but then i use a very light 18-55mm cheap lens to) and it looks sooo cool on the camera too, it doesnt look out of place at all, oh i have big hands so it helps there too

I've had mine on for a long time now, the first day I got it I just hated the grip, but I just love it now. Just before the Blackpool TP Meet I thought I'd take it off as I wanted to make things as light as possible. I just could not hold the camera, it just felt funny. So it's a grip for life now, or a 1D
 
I have a grip on the 40D, does not look as good as I would like but it mekes the camera the right size for me and gives me a shutter button in the right place if I switch to portrait. I would not be without it but it is a shame its noy moulded better - oh and yes I like marmite as well :lol:

Owing to the rounded contours on the 40D they could not improve it much to make it look as good a fit as the grip on the EOS3.
 
Can't see the point of grips myself unless you need the extra battery capacity. I do have the hands of a girl though.

Is it a willy thing?
 
I have a grip on my 400D and will be having one on the 50D.
my hands are too big for a non gripped 400D, i held a 40D recently ungripped and it wasnt too bad.
I use them mainly for the portrait controls and with heavier lenses it feels really good!
the look of them could be improved but they are too valuable to get rid of it fro that reason.

oh and i love marmite.
 
Invaluable for portraits, the controls and weighting are perfect. :)

Couldn't agree more i took it off the other day and the d80 seemed tiny.Very handy if you have large hands

That would worry me.... All style no substance :lol:

Had a grip on my 350D and loved it, and I bought a grip at the same time as my 40D, it's never been off of the camera. I just couldn't think of holding the camera in portrait without one.....

And I hate Marmite (and Bovril.....)

They have to design the crap, their pid to and they work to a brief, it does however allow the good stuff to shine.

Without bad there is no good:)
