I am going up to Yorkshire this weekend ( near Pickering) for the week. I am disabled and can only walk about 200 yards max with a walker. I would like to find some waterfalls to photograph. I dont mind driving a bit to get to them. Can anyone help with ideas for places I could get to? Also are there any Fireworks displays on 4th or 5th Nov? Any other places of photographic interest too?

Thanks
Sue

I dont know of any waterfalls close by but in pickering there is the station for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (Not sure if it runs this time of year), The castle and town is quite nice. If you have transport there is a really pituresque village just down the road towards scarborough called Thornton le dale if i remember correctly. There is a nice village square with a stream there and a small park (paved paths) that used to be full of birds.

Hope this helps.

Put this into Google Maps
West Burton, Leyburn, DL8, UK

You can just about get this view from sat in your car

Should be really nice this time of year and the drive is fantastic with lots of other places to stop off.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have done the railway before and I think it is only running weekends now for the winter. I will go and have a look at Thornton le Dale.

Thank you Neil. Thats just what I wanted.

Hi Sue,
I can't help with you request in the north but in the south you've got The cascade at Virginia Water - M25 jct 13 then the A30 which is around an hours drive depending on where you are in Essex. You can access it in wheel chair via a tarmac path that runs up to it from the Car park just for future reference. Various pictures have featured on here below is one I took.

Sue,

From Pickering you're only a short hop to Whitby. This weekend is the Whitby Goth weekend - plenty of photo opportunities without much walking necessary.

Sue,
If you do decide to go to West Burton as suggested above, about 12 miles further along the B6270 is Wain Wath Force, right next to the road. If you Google the name and look at images you can see the road and the falls.
That area is prime waterfall country but I am not sure what others are within your walking distance.
Quite a good book is Yorkshire Waterfalls by Mary Welsh, map refs. etc
Maybe have look in a bookshop in Pickering on a wet day !

Oh thats good to hear about the amount of water coming through. I will have to be extra careful with walking though. I'll pack some trainers.

and on the way you go past the hole of horcum.cant miss it its on the A169 about 10 miles before you get into whitby. Also theres a beautiful little village called Hutton le hole just off the A170 between Pickering and Helmsley.Speaking of Helmsley thats quite a nice little village with an impressive monument in the main square and a very good ice cream shop/tea room on the way out towards stokesley on the b1257 ,just look for the car park signs before you leave the village and the parlours at the entrance.

Thanks Chris for your suggestions. I know Hutton le Hole and Helmsley. I am staying very near there.

my advice on the footwear front would be if you can something, better than trainers would be advisable..its very slippery in places i nearly slipped in at west burton trying to get a bit too near the water.

Yes thanks Simon for the warning. I know trainers are not the best for slippery conditions. I used to have some walking boots. Now I wonder if I have still got them somewhere?
