Abuse during street photography

Well I went out last night with the 10D and a tripod to play with long exposures around the seafront and along the high street. Up the high street, a ****ed scottish women stopped to ask us why we were taking photos at night. Our response being 'it's a hobby' she replied 'not at night, you can't take photos. You look rather suspicous to me'. She then stood there watching us, so we carried on.

After about 30 seconds she got her phone out and ,we can only assume, pretended to call the police. It was quite difficult to keep a straight face as she attempted to act out the conversation about the suspicous couple photographing by McDonalds, most likely trying to rob the place. She then stood there watching us while still 'on the phone' for a good 10 minutes before we were done shooting an moved on to another area.

It's amazing how people do see someone with a DSLR and assume you're up to no good, I have been out many times with the compact and Gorilla Pod and never been questioned once. Do people really think that the guys actually up to no good are going to have a huge, in your face camera on a tripod in the middle of the street?!

I think it stems from jealousy, and not knowing. What people do not know, they are afraid of. (Darn, I like that quote I just made up!)

I've been asked, in my own town, if I was a tourist, because I apparently looked like one by wearing a 'large camera' (little do they know, a 450D is *not* a 'large camera') round my neck. How stupid...?
