The TP meet to Whipsnade earlier this year produced lots of fine images, the snow and ice really helped make some more unusual shots of the animals. ZSL's photography policy does not allow you to sell the images, but it occured to me that they themselves may be able to make use of some of my better efforts, so I contacted them offering to donate a few to their library and they accepted. No money involved obviously, but a useful and easy way of donating to a good cause was how I looked at it. They let you know when images are used and give a credit where ever possible. Anyway, I got an email last week saying that they are about to use one of the shots in their annual report which really pleased me. Today I was sorting through some old emails deleting all the rubbish and reread it - even better, they are using it full page, I had missed that bit, the info was further down the page :woot:

Anyway, fame at last :lol: This is the shot they will be using and the report will be available on their website in the next few weeks.

It's a great shot, no doubt about it. It does deserve to be published.

However (there's always one) ZSL have taken your trousers down and they are currently having a good old go on you.

Stay with me, I'm being positive, I'm on your side. ...

For an image of that quality, in a corporate annual report, I would start the discussion for a licence at around £400, single use, 12 months.

They know this, you now know this, the budget IS THERE for it. Don't believe that it isn't.

It is shameful that someone tasked with the job of sourcing images for publication would take the pee to such an extent but, and this needs to be stressed, you are not helping us, photographers, pro or skilled amateurs, by being complicit in the devaluing of our area of expertise.

You clearly have an eye for a good shot, you will obviously make many more decent images in future. Why would you give such quality work away, free of charge to people who have the money and can't do it them selves ?

Just because they say you can't sell images produced on their property, as you rightly discovered, does not mean that your image has no value.

They want to use it, great, but for free ?

Tell me, can you think of any other area of a creative industry which would accept such terms ?

I do a lot of work for various charidees, please don't be under the assumption that because it's a charity, it has no budget for the annual report. It will have a budget for accountants, printers, estate agents, solicitors, etc .. you know, other service providers, providing services (avoiding the word pro to include everyone)

That's a good shot, it's wanted for an annual report. Why should the people who want it not pay in the same way as they do for other services ?

In my experience, public and charitable bodies are fully understanding in matters relating to licensing and paying for a job, better than most.

Thanks again all, and for the benefit of Tyrone, I understand what you are saying and do appreciate your comments and their intent. I don't claim to be some altruistic photographer, like anyone else, if my pictures make some money, I am not going to turn it away. However, I walked into the zoo with the aim of taking those pictures for pure personal pleasure and indeed, loved every minute of it whilst being fully aware of their photography policy. I later made a decision to 'donate' - and that is the meaningful word here - just some of those images to their library for whatever use they wish. In lieu of a financial donation if you like. Donation - thats the key, and I am just pleased they like the shot enough to want to use it. They didn't ask for it, didn't use guile or persuassion to get free usage, it was offered freely and willingly. I am sure some full time pro's will frown on that, but it was MY choice and I am very happy with it ;)

Well done. Nice shot. Nice attitude. Glad you enjoyed your day. Try South Lakeland animal park if you ever get up to the lakes. Great for photography and they do a lot for the conversation of Lions.

Just goes to show that not all donations and acts of charity have to be of monetary value.

It is just a shame that some people always bring things down to stone hard cash when most of us here do this for a hobby.

I drive for a living, but would not dream of charging my friends and family everytime they wanted me to give them a lift somewhere.
