I'm in desperate need of some help and advice please <flutters eyelashes>

Ok, so I have a Sigma 10-20mm DIGITAL lens which to my dismay I have just discovered doesn't work too cleverly with a full frame 35mm SLR :shake: So now I have a problem in that I need a wideangle lens to be able to use with my film camera as I have to do a landscape project in the next few weeks for college (for what I have in mind, I do need a wide lens). Without the use of my 10-20, I am left with a 28-80 which obviously isn't wide enough.

Any recommendations as to what I can get that will work well my Nikon F80? (and not give me round pictures :embarrassed:) The problem being that I am not made of money, so budget is a major issue here... the cheaper, the better. The cheapest lens I can find is the Tokina 19-35mm (at around £130) but I have no idea if it's any good

Any advice / recommendations/ generous cash assistance ;) gratefully accepted.

That will teach you to buy Nikon. :bat:

You could have borrowed my 17-40 if that would have been any good to ya!

Anyone willing to lend the young (cough) lady a lens for a while?

Not much help was I?

Sorry

:canon:

Keep the 10-20 at longer focal lengths (say 15mm +) and you'll find that although there's some light falloff towards the corners of the frame, it won't outright clip the edges.

Not an ideal solution, but a perfectly workable one.

edit : Alternatively you can borrow my Sigma 15-30 (the one you used in Dorset a bit) - but only for a week or so as I use it a lot.

I did that, and my contact sheet has round pictures on it :( Even at 20mm, there is considerable vignetting which my tutor says is not acceptable to use for an exam project.

Many thanks for the offer of borrowing your lens Hoodi, but I think I'll buy one. At least then if I accidentally drop / damage it, I don't have to worry about giving it back or replacing it :) :thankyou:

I'm a little surprised Mini - i can use my 10-20 on my ff 5D at 20mm. Have you cranked the aperture right down? I know it's an obvious and maybe silly suggestion, but may work........

Pffff - use the vignette to your advantage. Know it's there and work with it, silly tutor. Point him in the direction of Eugene Atget and possibly slap him a little bit.
Or, if you don't want to get thrown of your course, don't.

The Sigma 15-30's don't go for much second hand. They were in big demand when released, but with all the other wider, smaller lenses on the market today, not many people want them.
I got mine second hand but in as new condition from Ebay for £150.

edit : As Jonnyreb says, the light falloff should curtail considerably the more you stop down the lens. But if your tutor is already on the lookout for it, it still may not be the best way to go.

A snapshot of my contact sheet..... (not v clear as it's a scan, but you get the idea). Most of these were probably shot at around 15-20mm:

Jeez - thats not good!

If you used Canon I'd lend you my 12-24 Sigma. You're only down the road - you allowed to use digital? I could lend you a Canon digital and the sigma if you're in dire straits?

Nope... no digital allowed :( (If it was, I wouldn't be having this problem as my 10-20 works perfectly well with my D70). This is the one and only time I'm regretting not having a C*n*n

Harsh, dont make me drag out the pic again Mini :):p

Goodness, outright clippage!

Not that it's any help, but they look like lovely shots..

Any photo of Cheryl not covered in liquid is one I have to see

erm.... now you have my full attention:) Meant the dead Nikon pic:lol: Perhaps you should share what you know ;)

I have Nikkor's 12 - 24mm Min ... but I am totally not sure if it will work with your F80 ...

If we can determine whether it will I would happily let you have it for your school work ... ;)

Failing that I cannot remember what 35mm lenses I have in the loft but I will check tomorrow but cannot promise anything suitable up there ... :suspect:

Does anyone know whether the 12 - 24mm will help Min out ...

:p

Dunno Ven - is it built for digital or standard? You have to excuse us Canonites - we dont speak the lingo......

Is the DX one in my sig Jonny ... I assume for digital - but have no idea if it is useable on 35mm gear though ...

:p

Hmm - just having a look through the books.......

Not the best news i'm afraid
"DX Nikkor is designed exclusively for use with Nikon Digital SLR models"

Assume this means for a cropped sensor?

If it is DX, then it will cause the same vignetting problem as my 10-20mm. I need a lens designed for a full frame camera as opposed to one designed for a digital camera. Many thanks for the offer though... :)

OK ... thanx Jonny ... and sorry Min ... :'( ... looks like I'm up in the loft on the morrow then ...

No promises though 'cos I really don't know what is up there ...

:p

Aperture, Grays and Ffordes have some used af and mf nikkor wideangle primes that might sort you out. One big advantage of the nikon system is that ancient stuff still works great even on the latest bodies (as long as you don't mind focussing manually and using a meter) I love digging around for bargain classic nikkors.

An opinionated but generally useful guide to the quality of almost any of the old but still usable nikkors is located here. He's a bit eccentric and doesn't suffer fools gladly, but very helpful if you ask him sensible questions. He helped me a lot when I was first starting out.

The sigma 12-24 works on a FF so you could try hiring one. I think Camera world hire them out.

Calumet also hire out Nikkors. So you could rent a 20, which would probably be fairly cheap or for a bit more, even the fabulous 17-35, which works beautifully on FF cameras.

Given that you're wanting something wider than a 28, you might be better off going the rental route and getting something good, because even going for second hand primes, there's not much that's genuinely good and also wider than 28, for under 200.

That "wow!" is even more interesting in that the 12-24mm can be used on a 35mm body from about 18-24mm. At 18mm there is a clear light falloff at the corners, but at 24mm this is no worse than the 24mm f/2.8 Nikkor at the same apertures. In short, if you shoot with an APS-sized sensor and a full-frame sensor as I do (D100 and Pro 14n when I wrote this article), you can leave the 17-35mm or fixed wide angle primes at home.

Not 100% sure if they did it in a Nikon fit Cheryl but check out ebay for Tamron's 19-35mm. I picked mine up a year ago for somewhere about the £60 mark (Although had to stay up until around 3am to get one for that low a price!) and I absolutely love it. IIRC it would have been the lens that I took my London Eye/avenue of blue lit trees shot with on the night of the London meet.

Right Min ... I have just been up in the loft and guess what ...

YAY ... I have a Tamron 28 - 80mm f/3.5 - 4.2 still attached to my trusty F3 ... :D

Over to you girl ... ;)

:p

Cheryl, I have the Tokina 19-35 you can borrow until the end of your course if you like. I don't really use it on my D70, and it WILL work on your F80... Collect at one of the gigs if you can make it along...

In her OP, Mini says she already has a 28-80, and it isnt wide enough...

She does that Joe ...

Guess I wasted a dusty trip to the cold & dark place for nowt ... :D

Never mind ... at least I know what I got up there now ...

Thankyou soooo much for looking Ven, but as Joe correctly pointed out, I already have a Nikkor 28-80mm! I really appreciate your help :thankyou:

I might just take you up on that offer Chris... if I don't cave in & buy one first! :thankyou:

You're welcome - it's yours on long term loan if you want...

If you do want to buy then this Linky to eBay might be worth a look. This is a slightly newer version than mine I think but is the lens I was mentioning. I think there were a couple of others from interenational sellers as well.

Thanks for that Robyn.... I did bid on it, but was outbid. Unfortunately, I had to go out so was unable to keep track of the bidding. I think the winning bid was about $10 more than I'd bid :bang:
