Yes
We've just received our AA renewal quote.

2 cars, std cover inc getting us home, £317.00. last year it was £145..... That's over double!!

Looked at the RAC, their equivalent is £202.

Green Flag is just £105.

Anybody ever had issues with Green Flag?

From what I gather Green Flag are pretty good. The only reason I didn't use them is because they have an age limit* on the cars covered. My daily car is 12 years old. My weekend car is 51 years old.

*or they did when I took out cover.

Don,t your insurance co do any deals with recovery firms
Aviva deal with the RAC ,LV deal with green flag

Green Flag only seem interested in recovery rather than effecting repairs.
We have full RAC cover as part of our insurance policy with M&S

IIRC, Garry Edwards had a significant issue with Green Flag.

Check what new AA customer price is. They're not supposed to be doing this with insurance. All customers should get new customer price,

I did. Their recovery contractor not only failed to turn up, but lied to me repeatedly whenever I phoned them to ask what was happening. And, to make it worse, they knew that I'm an insulin-dependent diabetic and that their failures placed me at serious risk.

I later took it up with Green Flag, who apologised and paid compensation. They told me that their contractor said that "they were unable to explain their failures". These things happen, but I think its concerning that the contractor is still working for them.

I'm not sure the aa agree that they are selling insurance. It's more a sort of service contract.

Is there ipt on the quote?

But I guess if your business model involves driving vans all around the country and fuel goes up like 50%....

Yes, there is IPT on AA and RAC membership these days.

I challenge the AA every year on their renewal price, citing the price of the opposition, and there is always a substantial movement.

Terrible way to reward loyalty.

Been a happy Green Flag customer for years. I've had to call them out 3 times over the years and they've been prompt and courteous.
Last time the local contractor was able to fit a new battery immediately with a 3 year guaranty - the old one was 2 yrs + 2months on a 2yr guaranty :(
I called them out on their app which located the vehicle (in my drive) and kept me up to date with their progress to me.

Our cars are 4yrs, 5yrs and 17yrs old. The 17yr old car is covered because I've chosen personal cover for all 3 drivers using the 4yr old car as my primary vehicle.
This was all set up at the suggestion of their agent on the phone and they attended at home for that car a few weeks ago with no problems.

i'm with the AA and they do that p*** take every year , i just threaten to cancel if they dont make a massive discount and if they refuse or offer a token amount i just cancel and take out AA cover from there own site with cashback at usually what i wanted them to charge in the first place.

I get green flag free with my bank account, I've been recovered twice, once when I had an electrical fault and a second time when the police objected to my exhaust not having a baffle in and made me get recovered, both times they were great, got me quick quickly and took me home with no bother

Thanks - you'd think I would know that since I used to work for a firm that underwrote it....... :D

AA *might* try to argue that the renewal rules don't apply to them since it applies specifically to "retail home and motor insurance" and although it is insurance of vehicles it's not motor insurance (as defined under the road traffic act).

Either way I just popped over to their site, Roadside, At Home and Recovery is currently £149 for 1 vehicle. £315 for 2 is high but doesn't seem outrageous compared to their walk in price. I bet nobody pays the rack rate though. First hit on Google was 1/3 off and a £55 voucher of some sort.

How many times a year do you use the service?

For me it seems like a huge con, just don't bother with it. If you break down you phone them up become a member there and then and they come and sort you out.

Won't work . You have to be a member 2 weeks before the first claim so that's a long wait at the side of the road

I had RAC for years and paid through our joint account, then they stopped me paying for a silly reason, the name on the card was my wife's so rather than use an identical card with my name on I told them where to go and looked at The AA but the prices were through the roof, onto Green flag 10 years ago and have never looked back, used them 2 times and can say I am very happy to pay for the service they provide, and you get NCB if you don't need them

You don't. I've done it multiple times.

"Don't have cover with us?
You can join the AA now. Call 0800 88 77 66 and we’ll come and rescue you today.

We'll provide instant cover for anyone broken down in the UK who's not already with us. Just so you know, you can’t buy cover online if you’ve already broken down – so please call instead and we'll help you."

You just phone them up sign up and they then do the same thing you normally would if you were a member so granted it takes about 10 minutes Vs 5 minutes.
Then I just let it lapse at the end of the year.

Must be a ploy to join you up . My AA booklet has in great big letters that you can't claim within 2 weeks of joining .

Well I've done it at least twice over the course of 30 years driving so... So I've had two call outs and only paid for 2 years in all that time. Absolute rip off paying each year for nothing.

Wrong thread, again!

D'OH!

I forgot we hadn't renewed our AA membership during lockdown.
Van went into limp mode in Cornwall last week and I was quoted that as well as taking out a new membership I would get an additional charge of £150.00 to rejoin as we were already broken down and would need immediate recovery.

I use Eversure, £47 for the year. Had to use them a couple of years ago to get recovered home from Skye to just outside Carlisle. Went without issue. Only caveat is the car hasn't to be older than 15 years old at time of breakdown. Can't fault them.

So, the AA eventually got back in touch today by phone. They had no idea what I was moaning about, just that I had complained. The best they could do was £20/month, that's still £240/year so I told them to stick it. I'm going to go with Green Flag, they're less than half the £20/month figure.

What really irks me is there is no customer loyalty, if they can do £240, why charge me over £300 in the first place?

Green Flag through my bank account....

Attempted repair, then recovery and then transport to garage when my 9-5s PAS fluid reservoir disgorged its' contents on the A332 in Bracknell.... it was a long wait but at least there was a Kebab van nearby (this was very late at night). Took me home and then to the garage (specialist).

Current 9-5 seems to hate GF. Twice the car has failed to start (resident poltergeist) and they are about to send a truck out when the person on the other end asks 'what sound does the car make when you try to start' my response is a click and then silence followed by 'let me demonstrate' and then the damned thing bursts into life....

I've been with Green Flag for years and used them a few times, always been very good, diagnose, fix if possible or recover, flexible in terms of where they will drop the and then run you home. They are an insurance company that uses local contractors to do the call out so I guess there could be variations around the country.

<Edit to add> last year my 88 year old mother was out with a friend who is not a lot younger and the car wouldn't start, her friend was with the AA so she called and was told minimum 5 hours to respond. There is no way either of them could sit in a car for 5 hours, they had to get a taxi home. So I guess all of these companies have issues.
