just looking at them now. looking into one after christmas in the sales (cheapskate lol)

i have been looking at Espon, HP and the dreaded C word (Canon) lol

which make is the better "all round", inks, print quality etc

looked at the following

HP Photosmart Pro B8350 Photo Printer
Epson Stylus Photo 1400 A3+ Photo Printer
Epson Stylus Photo R800 A4 Photo Printer
Epson Epson Stylus PX700W
Canon PIXMA iX5000 A3+ Photo Printer
Canon PIXMA iX4000 A3+ Photo Printer

i am swaying towards a Canon (oh dear lol) but are they the best all rounder? (i have an epson A4 photo printer for the smaller prints

i here Canon's are better for the heads? as they chenge when the inks are changed where as an Epson for example doesnt

Thanks in advance

Just an update on that, the HP looks to be out the window and after looking at Inks i am favoring the Canon even more

Genuine inks for the Canon can be had for under £40 where as the Espon stuff will be around £60 with having 6 different inks to the Canoncs 4

I've been using a Pixma ip4200 for a while now, and am looking to upgrade to the IX4 or 5000 after christmas. My reasoning is that it uses the same inks as the ip4200 of which I have a reasonable size stockpile.

I seem to remember the main difference between the IX4000 and the 5000 is speed....

speed wont be an issue to me to be honest. leaving it to dry for 24 hours is fine so waiting another 20-30 per print wont hurt

Don't get too hung up on the ink situation. The inks on the Epson run out at different rates so you probably won't need to buy all 6 at one time. The Canon inks may run out quicker making the ink/print cost similar

yeah the inks thing i know about having my current Epson, they empty at the different times.

thats not really an issue as such, but i think having 4 different inks compared to 6 can cause less problems

does anyone know about head blocking issues with any of the printers?

I use a Canon iX4000 and (desperately touching wood and crossing fingers!) have never had a problem with head blocking. I do make sure I run a print through it every 2 weeks if not more frequently just to make sure there's a movement of ink. Like my older s820 (which still gets used since I've got ink in stock for it) I only use genuine Canon inks (tried a 3rd party one once - NEVER again...). Both printers have a print head into which the cartridges click - the head itself does NOT get changed when the cartidge is (but the heads are apparently replaceable).

The iX4000 is a 4 colour printer (CMYK) and uses CLI8 carts for the CM&Y with a PGI 5BK handling the black. I think the black cart is only used when printing text documents rather than photos but I'm not 100% sure. The s820 is 6 colour (extra photo Magenta and Cyan) but, to be honest, you'd have to look closer than I can be bothered to to see any real difference. Prints from both last well in albums or behind glass when printed on genuine Canon paper or Ilford Galerie.

HTH.

Does the HP use inks far better, I had heard the Epsom and Canon cartridges have a hell of lot left in them when the printer reports there empty...

I might be wrong as I can not remember where I read this.

Cheers

Thanks Nod for that, i am now looking at the 5000 model which should come down alittle just after christmas hopefully. the number of inks dont really cause a problem if overall print quality is the same. its also alittle cheaper (if they last roughly the same time as Epson) to run Canon ink aswell. i would never use compatiables though, no way genuine only and the price for those seems very reasonable to (in my opinion)

Shutterman - i've not heard anything about the inks still having some left but the ones removed from my epson in the past have been really light compared to a full one, doesnt appear that anything is left but i could be wrong, the HP ink seems alitte more expensive so maybe thats why, again something to look at

(And to others who may be interested)

Here's a scan of a full cart and an empty one - not a lot left in the empty, although there's obviously some in the felt! Sorry, not prepared to cut the empty open and squeeze out the odd drop or 2 since they go to charity for recycling.

I reckon it's fairly obvious which is which!!!

Thanks for the pics and help

i have my heart now set on the 5000

whats the best papers to use? had a look at the ones listed (Ilford and Canon) but thicknesses and so on as there seem to be a few Ilfords

I use Ilford Galerie Smooth Gloss (green box) and Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy PP-101 for almost all my printing. If quality isn't a real priority ("contact" sheets and "have a look at this" stuff) I'll use whatever cheap paper I've got lying around - at the moment, that's some that came from Lidl and some Agfa paper which also came from Lidl.

I'm not saying that these are the best papers, just that they give ME results that I'M happy with! I get the papers (as well as inks) from our friends in the Channel Islands unless I need them in a hurry or I spot them at a good price in town.

I have an old Canon S9000 A3 and use the same papers .. really gives me good results as well

:nikon:

ive always been epson myself - with epson papers

i had only looked at the Epson stuff at first but after looking around i had decided on the Canon (i still dont like saying it lol). hopefully i will be the proud owner of one on Boxing Day if the sales are decent
