OK, mostly I have some film cameras but do quite a bit with a 300D, got a couple of stock zoomie-type lenses for it but mainly I use the film lenses with adapters. What I want to do is upgrade a little - even if only a 10D - to something a little more robust. Not after features, as long as it does at least what the 300D does (hence the 10D option) but will not crack if it gets lowered to the ground at speed.

So, what are my options here? Yes, a 10D, I know... but anything else I can hit s/h for around £300 body only?

Are they not plastic too? I know the 10D is metal-bodied, hence the interest in that. I am not restricted to Canon, though that would be nice.

The 20D and 30D both have magnesium alloy bodies. The 10D isn't compatible with EF-S lenses and you may also encounter problems with your adpated lenses.
 
I will likely "pass on" the EFS zoom with the camera, in fact likely both of them so that leaves me with a clean slate really - without the 300D there's no point hanging on to them... I mention the 10D as I had one a while back and stupidly sold it :(

Would I be considered sensible if I looked at the Fuji S3-type beasties? Nikon fit and a proper CCD too, unless there's something I am missing... though I did have an S1 a few years ago and when time came to sell it there was like... nothing... nobody wanted it!

Anyone care to comment on the S3?

I don't think the S3s are quite the same build... If you want one built like a tank, try the Nikon D1X/D1H. I had one and they are a million times better than entry levels. I suspect they would survive a bump. Or you could get a droppable/freezable/waterproof/stampable Olympus mju 1030 compact!! :D

I may have found a 10D also, at a good price too so I can stick with Canon... :D

You can get a 1D mk 1 for £250-300 on ebay.
 
Then again, I know the 10Ds can be a bargain have seen one for £150, though not as good build as pro Canon or the Nikon obviously.
 
True, but let's be fair, the 10D is just a posh 300D so no big step other than the metal body - mine has all the "optional extras" turned on anyhow so that case is really all I would be paying for.

I'd need a whole new lot of lenses though, the Nikon adapters all need an extra lens in them to get infinity... and that could get real pricey I suspect, even allowing for selling the 300D and the other kit :(

Nikon lenses are'nt as pricy as you might think... and you can use old AI lenses on the 1X still in aperture mode, you just have to focus. I've been doing this on my gorgeous AIS 600 mm...go on...you know you want to...;)
 
I'm trying to but the seller's a bit awkward :D

Manual is not a problem, I have a bit of experience there...
 
Almost a pre-requisite with proper film!
 
I had a 30D and now I have a 20D as a 2nd body.

Any of the 2 would do fine, do not go for the 10D if you can help it (no EF-S, MUCH slower to start, 2 seconds rather than 0.1 seconds, I missed many shots because of this, worse ISO performance and much more.)
 
Well, in the end I was tempted by the dark side - plumped for a Nikon D1x following the case so well put by Lawrence and despite his sale! I realise it's a total change from Canon and will mean pretty much new everything but the plusses overran the minuses by too big a margin. Had I been able to get a 30D in my price range then I may have thought twice, but the ruggedness of the Nikon was ultimately too hard for the Canons to beat.

I switched from shooting Canons (D30, D60 & 30D) 12 months ago when I was given a Fuji S5Pro. I've now sold all my Canon cameras, kept the S5 and brought a Nikon D2X. Hope you enjoy your D1X . .
