You know if you visit Kiev then you can go on a guided tour up through the zone, through Pripyat and right upo to the plant. I'd love to do it, Chernobyl truly fascinates me (is that a bit grim?) It was actually the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game that sparked my interest off.

Yeah I think thats the tour that this guy took. No I agree with you, Chernobyl is fascinating even if a very spooky and terrible place.

I'd love to go, but being in the forces I'm not sure I'd be allowed, as it's probably seen as putting myself in unnecessary danger (I don't belong to me anymore, I belong to Whitehall :D)

Mike, Swansea and Leicester? Where are you actually from? (Just curious, I grew up around Leicester)

i have just been reading about it and it looks like the disaster was caused by 1 man stopping the shutdown and proceeding at the wrong time with staff that didnt have the know how to do it i bet he felt sick after

but some cracking pics there i would love to go myself just for the experience

Ah a Whitehall man now eh? :p

Well yeah I'm from near Leicester myself, Hinckley to be exact. I'm in Swansea for another year finishing my degree.

I think feeling sick was the least of his worries after experiencing an explosion with several tonnes of radioactive material (!) but yeah it really would be an experience to visit the site.

Close, but I'm sure the offical report said there was nobody really to blame. It was 2 things that alone wouldn't have caused a problem, but together led to the build up of pressure resulting in a radioactive explosion. You may be right, but there's some rather shaky versions of the events around on the interweb...

...some people even blamed the Russian government for engineering the 'accident' to create the ultimate Nuclear training area for their troops :gag:

@Mike, I'm Army, so the MOD own me, I even have a NATO stock number stamped on my arse :D I grew up in Loughborough (sadly lmao)

You wouldn't catch me just over the border in Belarus. The wind was blowing their direction and although Pripyat and Chernobyl NPP bore the brunt of the radiation, much more of Belarus was contaminated than anyone thinks.

Ah right :D

Loughborough isn't so bad, there are much worse districts around Leicester :p

It's interesting how the Ukrainian government are using Chernobyl as a tourist attraction now, particularly as its more well known than their capital city now. Makes sure the world doesn't forget though.

It's worrying that they're allowing visitors, but then 2 minutes later begginf for money to rebuild the sarcophogus as it's falling to bits a leaking more radiation

Seen that before, it's pretty cool. There's another one been done as a photo diary too, it has the spookiest picture of a tree growing in the middle of a deserted living room lol.

I know a few people that has been over there. They said it was amazing at the same time as very thought provoking.

Is it me, or do those pictures look exactly like in game scenes or maps from COD4!?

Nope, you're absolutely right. Some of the maps in cod4 have been modeled on this location :)

Some pretty moving photos in there as well, I hadn't seen it before, but it serves as a good reminder.

The bit on COD4 with the swimming pool and the fairground are uncannily eerie even for a computer game!! :(

Found this and you can still book trips this year

I like the bit which says "Lunch in Chernobyl" wonder if they leave the burgers outside for that natural Microwaved effect :D

A local guy I know went recently, got amazing photos, and apparently stayed in what was like a 5 star hotel for a ridiculously cheap price. I think the guide was very expensive though.

The team for COD 4 went to Pripyat, took some pictures and used them for textures. They also modelled it pretty much spot on from the photos they took. The team who developped S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:Shadow Of Chernobyl did the same thing.
