On string of course!If you can see it or have a good idea where it is try using a magnet from an old speaker As even on an aluminium /carbon tripod there may be some steel in the head to allow a pick up.
Those magnets are quite powerful and should take the weight.
Don't put your tripod on a bridge parapet, no matter how wide and how flat and how safe you think it is,
The tripod will still find a way to hurl itself into the lake.
