A thread you all should read.

I guess under the DPA they cant release any info to Joe Public, but the police could obtain this info, if they were sufficiently interested?

They're probably too busy arresting Rob for doing donuts outside Heathrow ;)

I dunno, i've heard of far more people getting done over at OcUK than any other MM Forums...

no comment. no, really.

It doesn't matter what 'trust' system is used or not. It is the responsibility of both parties to take common sense precautions - and if in any doubt whatsoever, they should not proceed with the deal.

The trouble is that people seem not to engage brain when dealing with private individuals on the net - yet are cautious and suspicious when dealing with companies. Similarly, some people won't submit card details online but they'll pass the same detail to some unknown bozo over the telephone. Which system is more secure? Tis a funny old world.

That was what I was getting at, for all the restrictions and trust systems present there at the moment, some people will still walk straight into a scam. I don't know whether that's perhaps because they gain a false sense of security from all the restrictions or they are just generally too trusting I don't know.

yes.. then that will at least make the twart think again when stealing.

Thanks for the info, really appreciated-as newbie DSLR user I am always on the look out for decent second hand lenses and getting ripped off is something that I'd rather not happen!

being a professional ebayer (thats how i earn the money to stay alive) i've had numerous scammers try and trick me.

the number 1 thing about that guys advert that would put me off is the bad english!

But the thing i dont get is why people are choosing to complain about the scammer and not go to the police. If someone scams you out of money like that then you just go to your bank and tell them. They will either get the money back for you, or ask you to report to them with a crime number form the police. Its not exactly difficult, and thats what they are there for. It annoys me when people get conned out of money and then just let the scammer get away with it, its those kind of people that should share responsibility for the next scam! In my book they are nearly as bad as the scammer.

Gary.

I think you need to read the thread in full instead of speed reading...:geek:

He has been in touch with the bank. No Help.

He has been to the police. No help.

Re: FS:(UK)AS BRAND NEW EF 24-70 F2.8 & 70-200 F2.8 IS(MAY EXCHANGE)

I've been ripped off:cry:

Police involved but I'm not optimistic of getting my money back.

I've also informed POTN.

I'm aware of at least one other who paid for one of the items.

I believe one of my earlier posts saved at least one other from being ripped off.

I have bought quite a few things this way, and can normally filter out scammers because they dont offer collection as an option. This guy did and even gave his 'address'. I now realise he hoped that would reassure the purchaser enough and they would choose post option as I did.

In your case Mike he ignored you because you wanted to collect.

I'm annoyed with myself for being so foolish:o but lesson learnt.

Re: FS:(UK)AS BRAND NEW EF 24-70 F2.8 & 70-200 F2.8 IS(MAY EXCHANGE)

Hi, thanks for your good wishes and suggestions.

To answer a few questions:

1. I paid by bank transfer which should take up to 4 days. The day after I had made the payment I sussed what was going on but my bank refused to stop the payment. They said they could not do it. The other guy who got scammed tried to stop his payment just 5 hours after he had put it through and the bank told him it had already gone into the scammers account!!! In summary the banks are no help and neither are their so called fraud departments. Wont be doing a bank transfer again!!

2. I checked before I sent the money that the address existed but I should have gone to the electoral register.

3. The other guy who got scammed even went to the trouble of checking whether the bank account was based in Scotland and it is.

I'm a bit disappointed to have had no response from the moderators here. A sentence of sympathy wouldn't have gone amiss.
Have they closed the scammers account here??

thanks for that :)

whilst speed reading is one of my greatest failings, i thought this thread was general and not about a specific person.
I havent seen the posts you quoted (are they on POTN?). If they are on POTN then that might explain it as my IP is banned from POTN (dont ask :) )

Check out posts 17 and 18 of this very thread Gary..:)

Tut tut, banned from POTN? :p One of our staff is too :D

Too slow, too slow ;)

I'd just taken it out of the thread so you were trying to report what's effectively a non-existent post :)

Edit: Hehe, good to see I haven't broken the forum Kev ;)

I did a search for posts from the two user names he was registered with (Dragonman and Alextian) and in this thread its worth replace my 50 1.4 to 1.2? posted under Dragonman he also replies from Alextian recommending not to get the lens and save for 1D MKIII.

Dragonman
I'm actally need to hold some money for 1ds mark III, but has been waited over 1 year and no any result yet. so wanna "burn" a wee bit money before MARK III out.

however, 135F2 is a good idea I've tried from my mate and of course is a good glass. but I have 85 1.2 II already, do I need that?

Alextian
I dont suggest u upgrade to 1.2 its a little bit waste money, hold your money until to mark III out. I'm waiting news of mark III from canon as well.

Second post made 3 mins after the first

Some people are weird !

i think i would have spotted that as something slightly dodgy in the for sale post as he lists his products as 530 pounds - no one from england would do that and write punds rather than £ I dont think.

It's always apparent in the nigerian email scams (maybe because they cant be arsed to find the symbol £ to add in)

Bad english is always another give away. For purchases that large you should always do a search back in the forum and see what else they have sold. Who else have they dealt with? a quick PM will check if they are genuine. Asking for some ebay feedback / ocuk/hexus trust feedback would also be useful in spotting the scammers.

There are a lot of people out there trying to remove you from your money - just be on guard and get yourself some guarantees on the trustworthiness of the seller.

the little red triangle under you info

ehum, wheres the notify button ?

To notify forum staff of a problematic post, there's a warning triangle under the username next to each post. Just click that, fill the form in and hit send.

Note that you can't report your *own* posts though.
