I just took delivery of a very special pair of binoculars. Therse were given to me for winning a wildlife photo competition. They just ooze quality from the box through to the bins themselves. They are a limited edition( Simon King ) set of Carl Zeiss 8x32 Victory FL bins..Im so happy to get these as a prize but now im scrared to use them as i would be sick if i scratch or rub them...I also got a lovely letter from Zeiss congratulating me on my winning image. Zeiss will now use the image for advertising etc which im happy about.

Anyway here they are-

Well done Mark you deserve it, told you that shot was a winner

Thanks folks..The shot was of a Sparrowhawk which i have put up on the forum last week or so.The bins were valued at £1400 but a few places have them discounted to around the £1200 mark.. Its been a good year for me.. Got a job after being unemployed for the first time in my life, my wife got a fantastic job, i won my section of dog photographer of the year, i win these binoculars and now trying to buy a 500 or 600 f4 lens....Things have really picked up for me and i grateful.

I used to have a pair of the 10 x 42 version of those Mark. Stunningly bright! just didn't use them enough.
Should have kept them.

Kev, im seriously thinking i should sell them on to someone who will use them then i keep thinking its a prize and should be kept...Binoculars just dont get as much use with me as they should and its a shame to have them in a drawer in the house...i need to have a serious think...

i would look at as they are made to be used and every time it will remind you of your success.
take them out and dont worry about them :)

Having seen your image you deserve the prize, as to what to do with them well thats up to you I don't need to tell you how good those Bins are. But if you aren't going to use them that money would be a nice amount towards a 500 or 600mm.........tough choice.

use them and enjoy them i say !

they'll last forever and a nice reminder of your competition success

failing that i'll give you a tenner for them :)

Well done Mark, really pleased for you, I have the 10x32 version, tough as old boots and lightweight, great bins, and I carry them along with the 500, nothing to them

I know how you feel, I've had the same pair of bins for about 40 years and I can't remember the last time I took them out of the house. I think they'll be the one and only pair I have for life.

It's your prize so I think you should do what you want. If you keep them they may last you a lifetime but if you will hardly ever use them you could think about selling them and just buying a nice used pair for a fraction of the cost. My GF recently picked up a nice pair in a charity shop for watching birds at the coast and they're perfectly good TBH.

Well done. I haven't used Zeiss, but I do have a pair of Leica 8 x 42s, and a small pair of Leica 10 x 25s, bought when I could still afford that sort of thing!

Don't worry too much about scratching them. These binoculars are meant to be used, and they're pretty tough. Mine have survived a lot of use in the African bush and mountains. Should you keep them, or sell them and possibly buy something less expensive? I don't know, up to you really. The best binoculars are a pleasure to use, and the optical performance is astonishing, but you're also paying for the build quality and reliability of professional binoculars that will take years of constant use in all conditions. This might be overkill for you, and you can get a very good pair for a reasonable price, but I'd keep them.

Keep them mate. They didn't cost you anything. At least you've got them for when you do need a decent pair in the future.

Your in exactly the same position as I was when I won a Pair of Hawke 8x42 last year Paul. You only have two choices really, like yourself I would have hardly used them although I do have another pair if the need arises. They are Pentax, whilst bigger and cheaper than the pair I won they were a pressy from the wife a couple of years ago and I would not sale them. I sold the Hawke`s and put the money towards another lens as well, as for a reminder of winning the competition  You have the picture for that purpose ;)

Change of heart now and they are staying with me...Sems many on birdforum.net arent happy with me advertising and selling these. They see it as me being ungrateful--they couldnt be further from the truth..Anyway i will make a point of taking the accessories etc out next weekend and unpacking everything so it will no longer be new and may give me the push to use them more than 2-3 times a year.

Enjoy them mate. They really are superb bins. I so wish I had kept mine. b****r, I can see another purchase coming...

Don't worry about that! You won them, you can do what you want with them!

Congrats on the win - if you keep them enjoy, if you don't, just bask in your glory!

Seems to me that you win the bins for submitting a stunning photograph ....you can't take photographs with bins :-)

Sell them to me and buy another piece of glass !

If you aint going to use them then sell them and if you don't need new glass then treat the mrs.

well done on the prize.

As said above you do what you want with them, stuff anyone else.
