A strange way to take a shot or not

Yes
I was at a wedding at the weekend and the Photographer had his camera mounted on a tripod for the group/family shots after the wedding which is fair enough, but I never saw him look through the eyepiece once during or between shots and simply clicked away on the remote.

I've not seen this before and wondered if others work this way.

My initial thought was that he was extremely confident in his ability, but then thought well your not really seeing what you see through the camera and don't think I could take shots that way.

Im guessing he probably had a safe margin around the groups for cropping...and he would know at what points on the ground they were....but still, the positioning of individuals could be out!

Live view ?

Surely anyone would need a look to compose the photo ?

My guess would be he set the thing up, looked at his field of view then and didn't need to look again. I can see where he was coming from there, by concentrating on the groups and not the camera he would have been better able to see when to take the shots that would work best.

It did seem like a good way of working because he could concentrate on the groups and the huge list of shots he wanted to take. Although I this was probably down to the couple asking for everything.

On a side note the other thing I found strange was that he set-up a background a lights in the bar during the evening and displayed his studio work in the entrance hall. I suppose if you can get away with it why not, but wasn't my thing.

my tog at my wedding last year did this. i think its as stated above that you roughly know how wide the lens is on the background and shoots with in that area.

Like Peppy said, did he use Live View? Or maybe he glanced at the previews on the monitor from time to time to make sure all looked well?

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen to me. If you've left the camera always, always re-check it before taking the shot. I know the minute my back is turned a small child would start playing with the tripod or the focus ring, etc. :(

Nope no live view and didn't see him check the previews although he may have done periodically.

That's how I felt seeing him work, and when chatting to the groom later in the day he said that it was a friend of his who quit his job 6 months ago to go professional and I'm sure he said this was his second wedding.

The tog did come across as quite and confident to be fair and I guess I will see the results in a few weeks from now.
