Hi, we have quite a few squirrels that frequent our garden and I was looking to set up my camera on timer to take a series of photographs, prefocused, on the end of a fence where they sit...watching us...

The camera will be in the garden on a tripod and covered in a green sheet. Now, are they likely to jump on the camera??

Thanks.

Agree. Squirrels seems to be very inquisitive and investigate new things in their environment. I don't know but suspect they need to have a good 3D view of their area so they can get away from danger if necessary. A tripod with a camera on top could just be another point on the route.

Or alternatively, you could try befriending them by feeding them with peanuts or similar and getting some interactive shots. The wife and me went to a local park with a bag of peanuts to get some squirrel pics and ended up hand feeding them while getting some terrific closeups. At one point I even had one climb up my leg and hang on til I gave him a nut. They are remarkable, friendly animals when given the chance.

I love this idea. Right at this moment I'm looking out my window at about a foot of fresh snow that's sitting on my fence and envisioning your "Squirrel on Fence" shots. I hope you post some of them if they work out.

Also, I think weighting the tripod down should work. Unless you have decidedly shy squirrels I'm not sure you need to cover anything with a green sheet. In my experience squirrels are mostly concerned with food, so just don't put any food too near the camera!

Good luck!

why a timer..? surely better off with a remote release which you can fire when subject is in pre-focussed spot

Bushy-tailed tree rats, with a good press agent.
Seconded and you really don't want to invite them too close to your house in case they decide your loft would make a good drey. A camera is not what I use to shoot squirrels....
My boss assures me they're also very tasty.

Just set the gear up with a wireless trigger no need for camo, never use it

I like squiggles too... loads around on the common near me. They don't seem to like the dog though :(
