Hi
I'm looking to book a 2 night stay somewhere close to where I could maybe see Golden eagles, Deer, nice scenery etc ?

Any idea's ?

Thanks

You're very spoilt for choice Rudi, and it depends on when you are thinking of going. My experience is fairly limited in terms of going there for the sake of photography, but I have been going up there all my life for family holidays. Personally, for beautiful scenery, I love the area around Crieff, and I know when I last went in May I saw nature in abundance - Black Grouse lecking, Hares, Red Deer, Ospreys, Short Eared Owls, Red Squirrels, Red Kites, etc. I've seen Eagles up the glens in the past, and there is a remote moor above Fowlis Wester where plenty of different bird types can be seen on the right day. Glen Quaich near Kenmore can be good, but I gather they are building a wind farm there, so that will change things :(

Having said what I've said, my parents have just been to Scotland for 2 weeks (Crieff area and Dumfries area), and in spite of my Dad having his binos glued to his eyes for much of the time, they saw very little of interest, disappointingly. Maybe wait until the Spring?

The other area that I love is around Boat of Garten. Again, cracking scenery, and the opportunity to see plenty of wildlife. Some of the forest and loch walks there are just beautiful, and of course the Cairngorms are fabulous too.

Just get North of the border and head in most directions and you can't go too far wrong. I'm sure others can tell you about their favourite places.

Good luck, and let us know where you decide to go, and of course, post the pics

Thanks for the fantastic info Alex, I still haven't managed to get anywhere due to work but I plan to visit Kenmore in May, looks great.

Rudi, it depends on how much you want to travel. If you are after scenery and you want to see eagles and deer all in the one trip then head towards Loch Alsh and Skye. There are a few quaint b&b's on the shores of Loch Alsh and near Eilean Donan Castle. You will get all three, scenery, eagles and deer there.

Gorgeous scenery and an abundance of wildlife about here. Great deals in the winter months. There hermitage walk is nearby and is stunning (if a little busy during the day which affects wildlife).

Aviemore - Rothiemurchus has lots of wildlife too, check it out. Great deals here for short break. There is also a decent caravan park nearby the Hilton that is in the heart of the estate.

I don't work for Hilton! These are two places I frequent for short breaks rather regularly and I love them. There is also an abundance of great b&b's in and around Aviemore. I can recommend here and there is a b&b next to it that we never stayed at but the owners seemed lovely when we met them.

Any where in Scotland is fantastic for photo's. And everyone is more friendly than down south...Just been for a week from Newcastle up to Edinburgh onto Aberdeen across to Elgin and Findhorn down to the Kyle of Lochalsch via Loch Carron over to Skye then back down past Loch Lommond through Glasgow and home to Newcastle. What a trip;-) I Love Scotland.

Was it easy to fit that into a week? Am planning a week long trip at the end of May, starting in Glasgow, a few days on Skye, and then, I don't know??

If you're starting in Glasgow, Take a day and head up to Balloch and walk around Loch lomond shore. Or climb Ben Lomond if you have the chance. Drive up to fort William and you'll pass tonnes of scenery that will make you want to stop and shoot every 5 minutes. You'll also pass Glencoe on your left around just as you pass Kings house hotel. That's as far as I've been to take photos. Will be heading up that way in June to get photos for a few days.

Hopefully that's some help.

John

Remember, 'there be midges in them thar hills'.

May is at the start of the midge season, take precautions.

Pack some Skin so Soft, it seems to be the best defense, better than Jungle Formula.
