I have returned to chess after many years and find to my horror that all books and texts now use the algebraic notation and the traditional notation has entirely disappeared. Such a shame as the algebraic is so dull and uninspiring. How can Ng2-f4 compare with the gorgeous Kt-KB4. I find myself counting in my head now 'a, b, c, d, 2, 3, 4'. Hate it, and the worse thing is?...I can do nothing about it.
Ah well.
I bought a very old chess computer off ebay for ten quid including postage and on the most basic level I beat it three times out of five; this is a sad reflection on my playing ability but I hope to improve. I'd do online chess against anonymous players but how can I know they are not using a chess computer? When I can beat the computer nine times out of ten on the higher levels I will stride out and play real people; wish me luck.
