I have returned to chess after many years and find to my horror that all books and texts now use the algebraic notation and the traditional notation has entirely disappeared. Such a shame as the algebraic is so dull and uninspiring. How can Ng2-f4 compare with the gorgeous Kt-KB4. I find myself counting in my head now 'a, b, c, d, 2, 3, 4'. Hate it, and the worse thing is?...I can do nothing about it.

Ah well.

I bought a very old chess computer off ebay for ten quid including postage and on the most basic level I beat it three times out of five; this is a sad reflection on my playing ability but I hope to improve. I'd do online chess against anonymous players but how can I know they are not using a chess computer? When I can beat the computer nine times out of ten on the higher levels I will stride out and play real people; wish me luck.

I've got an iPhone app and play a distant friend on it. Im pretty sure they're not cheating as I seem to keep winning!

I know the moves of chess but haven't (and never have had) the patience to play "properly". Used to bug the hell out of a friend who I played from time to time since I would play the wrong move and throw him completely off balance! I far prefer backgammon and play a fair bit when we're on holiday in Crete (where it's a national pastime) but it takes a couple of games to get into the other variations they play from the "normal" Portes (gates). I've yet to find a Backgammon app on Win8 that doesn't use selective randomization as its way of increasing the computer's skill level... We can all be lucky but when the computer gets exactly the throw it needs 10 times in a row and you get useless ones, summat's up!

Backgammon s my 1st love when it comes to board games and yes, the way the apps/computer version do that drives me potty.

Back in the day I plzyed chess via plain postcard using the classic notations.

At one pount K was playing a guy in Philadelphia and woman in Melbourne.

Games lasted ages as airmail was expensive!

Not played for some time and the old contact type magazines are long gone!

Well, I must be improving as I have now beaten my computer three times and it has done the same to me. If it becomes 4 - 3 on the next game I will up it two levels and continue. Just bought Chess Openings for Dummies; they must be really good Dummies!! Arrgh!

The nearest I got to to a "chess computer" was when buying my Vanilla PC With an sx25 processor, windows 3.1 a 57Mb HDD and 4Meg of RAM (£2100) was a 'free' copy of Chessmaster 2000.

A very expenxive chess computer!!!

Had the game sussed within a week so just used it for work.....

You had the game sussed in a week!? What are you, some sort of chess prodigy?

I presume you learned the moves then decided it wasn't for you; well, I hope so otherwise I might just give up.

No not a prodigy but played chess from 7 years old (1962).

The Chessmaster 2000 game would be about 20 years later!

It was not as complex as later versions.

My secondary school had a really active chess society AND there would be loads of people playing undr cover every Sunday morning on Clapham Common in South London. There erd some very good players there. Some would play 2 or 3 games at the same time. So for me it would be fottie in the morning followed by chess.

I can honestly say I love the game and I also love maths. I can also say I am crap at both, it's such a paradox.

I can only say - try to visualize the game 3 dimensionzly as a mathematical model. IF ANDS & BUTS.

My A Level Msths teacher was our head of the chess society.

I do the 'if, and's & buts' in chess but I take so long. However, I am hitting it hard this time and trying to learn by saturation, I think things may be sinking in.

Its how we were "taught" but practice practice and more practice is the way to improve. Add to that the discovery of public space chess gatherings were priceless for tough practice.
