2 months ago I changed to 3(Three) for my internet using a supplied modem that uses a data sim for connection, Great deal 40 gig of data per month for £20 Pm on 12 month contract + no phone line to rent, Perfect I think. What happens if I run out of data I asked, The internet just stops working until you either add some top up or the month starts again, Great. The signal is good & the internet works a treat. So on the 29 May my internet stops & a get a message that (You have run out of internet) Their wording, Not mine lol. So when my new month starts & I am back online I decide to check my bill £84.30...Yes you read it right £84.30. The data had actually ran out on the 28 May unbeknown to me & I had apparently used 6+ gig of data on the 29 & they charged me £64.29 for the one days usage. So when I eventually get to talk to somebody in India, he tells me that I should have known that I could block 3(Three) from taking up to £65.00 every month if I went over my 40gig limit which I have now done But had to go into the 3(Three) shop in Leicester because the phone line went dead when I told the Indian guy just what I thought of the company he works for & that if I refused to pay up they would cancel the contract & then charge me £420 for the trouble.......So this is just a word of warning to anyone changing to 3 (Three).........DON'T... DON'T....DON'T :mad::mad:

Wait, you blame the company for going over your own data allowance?

Then you blame the company for asking for full value of the contract that you signed if you default on payment?

Does 2 wrongs make a right? What are you warning people about? Is it just the fact that the data don't stop when it meant to? Well...I thought you would be cautious of that, double check and would stop yourself going over, and then when you do, the only person to blame if yourself?

If I were in your shoes I'd make a complaint to management about the excessive fee, ask them to make an exception to waive it, suggesting not pay at all is like trying to beat a stone with a stick. You are a new customer, you have no history of good paying on their books, pulling a move and play hardball like that will just cause them to play hardball back.

Ps I am on 3, unlimited data, love the free feel at home over half the planet from USA to Australia to Hong Kong to Brazil to Italy and Sweden. I don't have plans to leave them because

1 - I never hit the limit (which I know in the small print is not unlimited, yes I read the small print)
2 - the feel at home feature is worth like £200 a year easy in data abroad for me.
3 - never have problem with signal or speed

I was told by the salesman that if I ran out of data the connection would cease until I either paid extra or the monthly allowance started again. I was never informed about being charged extra at all & feel that this was a very underhanded way of extracting an extra £64.29 for just over 6 gig of data.I am also a long standing 3 customer with my mobile phone package.

I feel for you, its not always easy to know exactly how much data you have left, I was with vodafone and the did they same thing to me. Their data checker is usually at least 24 hours behind, or at least was. I also had a sim in a mobile modem so missed the text message saying I was close to the list. I understand the business model, it makes make them plenty but they really should stop your usage once you've reached a limit. My EE contract does just that, its not possible to rack up huge charges for going over your limit.

Agree with Raymond Lin on this (apart from the coverage which I find can be a bit patchy)

I don't recall about in-country use but don't they normally text you when you have incurred x charges above your plan? Is there a text on your modem?

Got to say, 6 gig in a day is quite significant and being on the day you went over your plan limit exacerbated the situation.

Just highlights that mobile data is not intended to be used for permanent type connections.

It's why 3 cancelled all of the One plans with unlimited tethering. People used them in their houses instead of broadband and it cost the company a fortune.

I never trust saleman, especially telephone companies after my first contract when the guy claimed I could migrate my number afterwards. I lost that number and never trust them again.

That and I generally do not trust salesman in general, I usually know more about the product I am looking for than the guy selling it to me.

My partner went over on my minutes (£15) they refunded me and said sorry, in fact they gave me an extra £5 as well in credit. I'd recommend them tbh

wierd, when i was with EE in scotland i had a mifi with a sim and 20gb a month and when it ran out it just stopped.
i also had a status page which i set as my home page to tell me what my usage was.

its a poor show all round but if it is cheap it is usally crap.

don't know about the data package but my daughters mobile package with 3 is capped, once she reaches her limit ( calls or data ) it stops until the roll over date but we had to request the cap at the start of the contract

That's what I was told would happen to me Mark.....How wrong i was

knowing how 3 can be from a past experience with them i always get them to confirm whenever i request things like making sure a caps in place a few days later to make sure it's on their system

to be fair it was the only service provider at the time ( about 6 years ago to current day ) that offered a cap on their cheaper tariffs most would offer a cap but the cap would start at a set over spend limit, 3 would cap at the tariff limit which suits us fine where the kids are concerned
