My four year old pc has bit the dust,i ran it for 31/2 years with 8 gb of ram, just replaced it with in some ways a lower spec unit due to finances,i upgraded my old pc to 16gb about 6 months ago so this ram is fairly new.

The new pc is running 1 slot out of 4 with 8gb in but has the capacity for 32gb,i checked via crucial both pcs needs,as far as i can see the ram for both is the same bur there stock number is different, will some one that understands these things please look at the links and tell me if it is the same ram.

They should be compatible.

DDR ram runs faster in pairs as well as it runs in DOUBLE data rate instead of singel.

DDR stands for Double Data Rate so that's how it always runs. If there are two, preferably identical, DIMMs then it can run in dual channel mode which splits the access between the DIMMs.

Right dont get too technical,i have put the two 8gb sticks in 1 and 3 slot,i have again from my old pc two matching 4 gb sticks of the same spec as the 8gb but a different make, would these work in number 2 and 4 slot.

Thanks

They should work. It's certainly worth trying as you won't damage anything if they don't. If you have the manual for the new motherboard there should be a table in there of permissible combinations.

Yup, should work. The worst that can happen is it won't boot when they are in.

not necessarily, mismatched sticks can cause all sorts of odd little behavioural issues such as program crashes, odd blue screens. those sorts of things that can take forever to track down.

best thing is to do a few load tests with the ram in place, run a memtest and a hyper pi. before anyone says it i know hyper pi is more CPU loading but if anything is going to crash a system that will.

Thanks every one for the input, have got a bit sidetracked so will pick this up later
