A question of cropping

When you pros crop an image for sending off to the papers, do you try to stick to cropping to a specific ratio eg 3x2 or 2x3, or do you just crop in unrestricted and tight to the action and the ratio is what the ratio is?

im specifically asked for 7x5@300dpi but if possible i leave some "slack" for the picture editors to crop further or to a different ratio if required
 
I always crop around the action but if an important shot such as a goal or cele I may send in different orientations as you never know of the space editors have allocated.NLP use quite a lot of squares as do some of the Nationals for "lower league games. I never send to specific dimemsions or sizes though.
 
No rules for me - just crop to capture the main action in the shot and send it off.
 
Try to keep to 8x12, so looks tidy on web site, but can crop to any dimension.
 
No specific sizes here, try to stick to either 3000 or 2500 px longest side at 200 dpi. no set aspect ratio
 
I'm instructed to crop to 30 x 20cm or vice versa @300dpi. I usually try to leave a bit of slack for further cropping
 
I just tend to close my eyes and guess.... Makes life just that little more exciting, gets the adrenaline going.

Its not the pic editor who would usually spend the time and effort but some Photoshop guru under instruction from the pic editor, it takes all of 5 seconds to crop a photo so let them decide at the other end, provided you leave a bit of slack round the original image there's absolutely no problem

Makes things easier for them, and shows a different image without them having to crop it too see what it looks like. Its what i was taught when i first started and its done me well. Ive sent variations and theyve used my crop's instead of cropping down the landscape.

I also feels it varies on deadlines aswell. late tuesday night im sure theyd prefer not to have to start chopping things out..

Thats my experience anyways.

This season started using set sizes (10x8,7x5) etc so that when I printed any they were set sizes, surprisingly I have found that the vast majority of my footy shots fit perfectly to one of the standard crop sizes
 
Why? this was coverd in another topic a few weeks back, editors will edit images to fit any space regardless of how its been wired through

Except that there are very few picture editors out there anymore and it's highly unlikely that a blunt will see the potential in an uncropped photo.

If you want editors to see or use your photos as you can see them, then crop accordingly. If that means two or three crops from the same image, then go for it.
 
Surely if you crop without an aspect ratio from the start you crop the image as it should be rather than making 3 different images out of 1

don't see the point of it personally. if editors want to use your pictures, they will regardless of how you send them
