A Question about Camera Bags

I notice that most camera bags now are made so that the camera/lens combo is facing downwards, ie with the end of the lens close to or even touching the bottom of the bag. I'm looking for some reassurance that this isn't a problem before I make a final decision on which bag to go for.

Thanks,
Al

I've got a Tamrac Expedition 9x rucksack and that has a space but the other way up, with the camera body next to the bottom of the bag. It's well padded to protect the camera for normal use but I don't know if it would stand up to a drop from a height.

Have a look on here http://www.cambags.com/ for some good reviews that'll probably help you. Good luck.

Hi Al

I've had three backpack style camera bags (all LowePro) to hold my equipment over the years as I've added new lenses and bodies. I've never been worried about the camera/lens setup pointing lens down, but as mentioned above, I don't plan on dropping the backpack any time soon! My current setup involves a 7D with a long lens resting with the body on the 'bottom' of the bag and the lens pointing up (when the back is standing up on its base), and then a 5Diii with a shorter lens pointing lens down, nearer the top of the bag. This makes it very accessible when I stand the bag on the ground. My current bag is a LowePro ProRunner 450AW if that helps. The extra depth was essential because both bodies are gripped and the space for the laptop is handy if I am away from home.

Most bags allow you to more the various dividers about to best arrange things for the kit you have - just make sure when you do so that the sides of any given 'space' are the right size for the lens that will fit in it - just enough to mean if the bag is moved suddenly (eg falls over) things will tend to stay in place, rather than 'bounce' in their 'compartment'.

I always have front & rear caps on all my lenses, and have never had any issues with how things are fitted into bags.

Thank you all very much - your experiences wil make my job a lot easier :)
