A query about bus, bike and taxi only lanes

Isn't it because it's all classed as public transport lanes, can you imagine how annoyed you'd be stuck in a lane and being charged extortionately

I dont know the official answer, but im glad they can use them, as it saved me a packet yesterday. You sitin traffic in a black cab, and the meter just keeps going even when you arent moving. Charge for time not distance apparently...

It applies to black cabs and is something to do with them being available for hire e.g. you can hail a black cab where as private hire taxis you can't.

I see. Guess that does make some sense.

In Leeds all taxis seem to use the lanes.

Cheers.

I've never understood why any taxi is classed as public transport. Surely it's still in effect no less then a car journey

It is public transport innit, your flag one down on the street or phone a private hire firm as a member of the public hence the term Public Transport. o_O

Are you serious? lol... it's not your car, it's for the general public to get them from A to B (and get ripped off at the same time).....just like a bus or a train etc except for more people

as serious as I ever am ;)

no but its a car. It still uses as much resources and causes as much congestion as my own does. Unlike a bus or a train it goes where I tell it to, when I tell it (if the driver doesn't want to go the long way round that is) rather then sticking to a timetabled route

But I am a member of the public and I use my car as transport, so my car is effectively public transport. I hate bus lanes with a passion, they just cause congestion. Hate buses too.

It's public transport because you pay a third party a carriage fee.
Not a tough theory to grasp

Whatever, buses are just the work of the devil and cause congestion as well as forcing cars to create more pollution. That and alot of their drivers think they always have right of way.

Yes yes....but personal opinion aside it's the reason cabs can also use the lanes lol

taxis do not take up valuable parking space in city centres

I beg to differ! There are several Taxi ranks here which stand empty outside peak times, leaving potential pay-to-park slots tied up 24/7.

I don't think that taxis should be allowed to use them personally a taxi is a private on demand service rather than a scheduled public service a la the bus and as such IMO should not get any special treatment...otherwise you have to ask while why cannot a limo I book use the service, or a chauffeur driven roller?

Because you can't flag down a limo or a chauffeur driven roller when you pile out of maccas after a gig. :-)

Tell me about it, we got in a taxi at Euston station to go to earls court

We set off then 5 minutes later he said

I can't go fru da centre of landun cause eres a rally on, i gotta go raund

We were stuck in there, the traffic was a nightmare £32 by the time we got there

That still doesn't stop them being a private on demand service as apposed to a scheduled service, why should a individual or small group get preference over the general driving public...the essence of a bus lane is to ensure that a scheduled service remains just that, on schedule so that the public know it is a reliable service that they can confidently use for travel needs

When have you known a bus or rain service to be on pefect schedule. That argument is nonesense.

Train not rain.
Though you can probably more accurately predict rain.

If it stays on schedule or not is a different issue, maybe buses don't stay on schedule because other motorised vehicles that really don't deserve to be there are using them...I take it from the tone of that last response you've realised your point about being able to flag a taxi down doesn't really hold water as to a case for priority treatment

Regardless of whether they have a schedule or not, they are licensed by TFL as part of the 'Public transport' system. I agree that the unlicensed mini cabs shouldn't be allowed in bus lanes though.

That's only London, and only black cabs are allowed in bus lanes there. Other licensed taxis aren't

This it's more than just TFL do try an think outside of London, I know some from London don't realise life exists outside of the M25  in saying that please note I have no idea of your location as I've not looked ;)

There isn't, is there?

Well lets put it this way I've met two motorcycle couriers in the last month that have delivered ventilators from Westminster to myself here in deepest darkest Warwickshire, and neither of them has ever had to venture outside of the M25 for deliveries before  so maybe their isn't
